Movie Reviews of Pet Shop Boys: Cubism in ConcertMovie Review: Pop At Its Best! Summary: 5 Stars
There are incredible and amazingly talented pop artists that are often overlooked and underrated. The Pet Shops Boys are the prime example to the aforementioned statement. Pop music should be simple, fun, and, most importantly, accessible to anybody. However, the quality, originality, and eloquence of the same should not take a back seat just for the sake of pure entertainment. Then again, the Pet Shop Boys are the prime example of the previous statement. Be it politics, love, fame, or whatever topic this dynamic duo chooses to explore and ponder about, the elegance and sincerity projected in their crafting of their material and how they convey and express their message and sentiments about a particular topic makes them a force to be reckoned with! Prime example of such statements is their "Cubism In Concert" DVD.
There is nothing calculated about this concert at all. It's simply the Pet Shop Boys at their very best! Savvy, intelligent, and always entertaining. No big costume changes, no troupe of dancers that recreate a particular video, no unnecessary set alterations in between songs. Their focus is in the presentation and delivery of the material chosen for this particular show. And what show it is! Something for everyone. Old and new and everything in between! And while there may be some questionable song choices ("The Sodom And Gomorrah Show" and "Home And Dry), the arrangement and flow of the entire show makes the audience almost forget why better song selections were left out rather than be part of the concert; they should have kept "Before" in the set list, for example. One can easily forgive this mishap in exchange for the magnificent dancers, musicians, and singers that complement the live experience.
This is not a trip down memory lane as it is often said. It is a show about the endurance and creativity that this group has enjoyed and achieved in more than 25 years in the business. While the Billboard charts are assaulted with the latest wave of overproduced and manufactured "talent," it is refreshing and gratifying to see that talented musicians, like the Pet Shop Boys, do stand the test of time and that their art and creativity are timeless and not forgotten, but rather much celebrated and acknowledged by their legions of fans and pop music lovers all over the world, including the USA. They are proof that there is no need for shock, gimmicks, or controversy to become, and most importantly, endure and sustain a career that spans decades. A must for every "Pethead" around the world. And a most welcome and satisfying suggestion for each and every pop music lover.
