Movie Reviews of Persona

Movie Review: Among his best
Summary: 5 Stars

Ingmar Bergman is one of few directors who have won universal acclaim for non-english-spoken features.

His PERSONA 1966 is 1 of his most complex productions and showcases two brilliant performances from Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson - long active in his "reportary company"...

What is stunning with Bergman is that he dares to let us get into the soul of his protagonists, even their duller and boring sides... Their long conversations, inner dialogue and soliliques are a Bergman trademark.

Mr Bergman and the characters of his films are easy to identify yourself with because he deals with the inner strength, turmoils and angst of the human being. "Persona" is no exception:-)

Movie Review: Persona
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the director's more surreal, experimental works, "Persona" is an intriguing study of mental illness, role reversal, and the somewhat hazy boundary separating one individual identity from another. In the poetic opening shots culled from old reels, Bergman makes us aware we are watching a film, but the story itself derives emotional intensity from Bibi Andersson's Alma, who becomes ever more vulnerable the deeper she plumbs her life experience. "Persona" is a spooky, mind-bending film that casts a unique spell.

Movie Review: Great film, Good quality DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of Bergman's best and more challenging films. If you have any interest in Bergman or in film this is definitely a must see. I just wish Criterion released this, as they've always been more generous on the supplement side. That minor quibble aside, this is a great film, by one of the medium's true masters. (I've run out of clichés so I'll end the review here)

-Note if you're just starting out getting to know Bergman, I suggest Wild Strawberries or Smiles of a Summer Night-

Movie Review: Where's Criterion?
Summary: 5 Stars

The five stars is for the movie. As for MGM they've committed a sin. The picture is grainy, the special features freeze up on my copies of this and Hour of the Wolf. And the commentary on both is just awful. All this guy does is point out the obvious. "Max Von Sydow is a troubled man, the bushes..." Where's criterion with its top notch restoration and commentaries done by real scholars. Isn't MGM paying attention? They have no respect for this movie. They should have never got their hands on it.
