Movie Reviews of Penny Serenade

Movie Review: Classic Cary Grant, good copy
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is Public Domain, so just finding a copy on DVD is an accomplishment. Paying less than [...] bucks for anything viewable is also an accomplishment. For the money, this is a good DVD to add to your collection. At least until and Remastered version is released.

Movie Review: Penny Serenade
Summary: 3 Stars

I expected the movie to have a "rough" appearance. After all it is a very old film. The issue I have is that there is a scene missing. It happens to be what I consider the best part of the film. It is when Cary Grant's character is forced to appear before the judge with the little girl to plead his case on gaining legal custody of the child. The scene begins with him coming into the court chambers. The judge discovers that Grant's character is unemployed then turns to tell the child welfare advocate played by Beulah Bondi, that the matter should not have even been presented before the judge. The next scene I see is Cary Grant's character carrying the child up the stairs in the apartment to his wife played by Irene Dunne to inform her that the child is theirs because the judge allowed them to legally adopt her. The part that is missing(based on a previous viewing of the film on T.V.) is when Grant tearfully pleads with the judge to allow the couple to retain custody to adopt the child. I felt it was one of the finest performances Cary Grant ever did in any movie and I was very dissappointed to find it missing in this Dvd. Hence the reason for the 3 stars. I love the movie, it is a shame that that scene has been omited for whatever reason.

Movie Review: Grant, Dunne & Stevens Elevate This Soaper
Summary: 3 Stars

This sad soap opera works because of the actors. Cary Grant is excellent in the male lead, adding some good, much-needed comedy in spots. Irene Dunne is very believable in her role as his wife. Edgar Buchanan ("Applejack") elevates this film with a very likable role and Beulah Bondi's "Miss Oliver" looks like the proverbial "old battle-ax" but proves to be a very caring person.

Another good feature of this film is that it was directed by George Stevens, one of the best of all time.

As with all the reviewers here, I have yet to find a good print of this movie. Whether VHS or DVD, it's always a lousy transfer. Even a disc claiming to give us a "remastered" version is still no good (see the reviews). This film deserves better.

Movie Review: This version is missing an important scene!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have always enjoyed watching Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in the movies. They made some pretty good ones together, too. The first time I ever saw this movie was on AMC (when there were no commercial interruptions). I cried so hard thru a couple of scenes - it has always been a memorable film to me. I bought this particular DVD to replace my VHS version. This DVD version is missing a key scene, where Roger goes before the judge concerning the adoption of Trina. I cannot believe this scene would be cut - it is very important. The movie itself is pretty clean, considering the age of the movie and that it is not remastered. I would give the movie itself at least 4 stars, but 1 star for the fact it has been cut.

Movie Review: ANOTHER BAD SERENADE!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

It is impossible to find a decent print of this film. Several years ago, Republic Home Video had a decent tape and laser disc verson of this film which featured the entire 119 minutes of the movie. Since then, no other company (that I have found, anyway) markets the full version; only a nasty, quite damaged 116 or 117 minute edited print from a later release. This "bad" print seems to be the one most often utilized for DVD mastering.

Please, who ever has access to better source material which features the entire movie, release this film on DVD so that we may enjoy it in a better, more complete form.
