Movie Reviews of Penelope

Movie Review: James McAvoy In A Twist on An Old Fairytale
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this movie from Netflix because James McAvoy was in it. I loved him in Chronicles of Narnia, and then saw him in Becoming Jane and I was hooked!
I liked this movie Penelope. It was not too complicated, but just a twist on a fairytale.
It really worked. Reminded me of Beauty and the Beast reversed because this time the Beauty was a man James McAvoy and the Beast was a cute pignosed damsel.
What fun it is. Just the sets alone brought the whole idea to life and the story was ingenious. High Five to Reese Witherspoon for this film that thoroughly entertained me. And keeps on entertaining me, because I purchased the film. Always fun to watch.
James McAvoy is great in the part of the only man who does not find Penelope ugly.
Love wins out. As I said before I like this movie very much. I believe you will too.
Get out the popcorn and sit down prepared to laugh and enjoy the film. Light romantic comedy.

Movie Review: A beautiful fairy tale!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll admit up front that the only real reason I picked up Penelope today is because I was dying to see the sneak peek of Twilight. But then I read the synopsis a couple of times and sat down with my young boys to watch the movie. WOW... what a pleasant surprise!

I had read the other reviews prior to watching the film and didn't really expect a whole lot out of the film. Yes, it's true that a lot of it is predictable, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a beautiful story. I loved that it was clean enough to show my small children. My 6-yo really paid attention and understood the curse and how it was lifted. The cast was amazing. The costumes and rooms and scenes were colorful and so appealing to the eye. I'm so happy that I picked up this film. I was equally enthralled and pleased with the Twilight footage, but just so surprised at how much we enjoyed this film. I think it's going to become a family favorite!

Movie Review: Adorable and touching
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll be honest, my roommate forced me to watch this, and I expected it to be pretty lame. Instead, I ADORED it. The look of the movie is awesome--lots of color and texture. The feel of it is a bit surrealistic, like a Roald Dahl book, which I don't always like, but I think they did it just right this time. The hero and heroine are utterly charming and their love story is just beautiful. It feels very real, not just a series of romantic cliches. Also, Penelope's pig-nose is very well done; it's startling, and you can understand why so many people react badly to it, but it's done in such a way that you get used to it, and it even becomes sort of cute. It would have been easy for the movie's creators to either make it hideous or negligible, and either one would have damaged the story.

This movie is sweet and charming in every way. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Movie Review: Better than I thought it would be
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented this from a Redbox, expecting a fairly entertaining flick after reading the summary. However, this movie is truly wonderful and deserves all the positive ratings. So many movies throw in smut scenes and crap like that, but this movie was actually very clean and kid-safe, which is a fresh breath in today's society where people slap sex onto things to sell them.

The story is enjoyable, with a nice mishmash of characters (especially the midget) with a surprising and very satisfying ending that is actually very thought-provoking. I also liked the general public's reaction when Penelope finally reveals herself and the events that follow, this movie is really a enjoyable one and I would recommend it to just about anyone except for people who are really averse to the general chick-flick genre.

Movie Review: Stunningly beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

Penelope is wonderful! The character, the story, the film...all of it. The visuals are stunning and fabulous. As someone who is jaded about fairy tales, I was pleasantly surprised (though not too surprised) and I am glad that this is a very strong character and a good feminist role model (wedged amongst the many other typical story lines in Hollywood, no matter how well done). Not only is the story fantastic, the visuals and design of the film just blows me away. I watch it again and again sometimes just for the set! Her room, especially, fills me with admiration. It's not often I want to emulate a set from a film with such ardor and passion, but Penelope's...I do.

If you haven't watched it, watch it! :) If you haven't noticed the visuals, well start paying attention! :D
