Movie Reviews of Paycheck (Special Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: Was Surprised...
Summary: 5 Stars

I had just about given up on Affleck after Gigli. Actually, JLo's acting in that was rather good; it was Affleck who seemed so mesmerized that he couldn't even remember his accent at times. Then after he wussed out on the wedding - I just thought that I would have a difficult time believing him in a "take-charge; in-control" role. Of course, I think that Ben marrying Jennifer Gardner was the smartest thing he's ever done. I WANTED him to marry Jennifer Lopez - they LOOKED GREAT together. But I honestly believe that Jennifer is BETTER with Marc Anthony and Ben is better with Gardner. I know. I know. It's supposed to be his acting ability, but it's difficult for me to separate the two!

I mention all of the superficial tidbits above to say that I didn't expect to like PayCheck; didn't really even WANT to like PayCheck. But I did. Totally. I was really surprised because PayCheck gripped me from the very beginning.

The special effects were great; Affleck's acting ability was once again on-course and he looked great; Thurman was perfect in her role as well.

The one aspect that I questioned about the film: Affeck's character designs a "time viewer" based on Einstein's theory of relativity. His memory from the 3-years is erased and he has mailed himself a packet. Obviously he couldn't write a letter because his mail would naturally be monitored, etc. Therefore, he had to send himself innoculous clues that would enable him to escape and thus prevent his death.

Obviously, he would have had to view his future many, many times while continually adding items to the packet in preparation for his escape. Otherwise, the "time viewer" would have only revealed to him the first item that he would have needed to avoid being captured/killed. It would not have been able to show him anymore items as he would have ceased to exist without that first item. The movie didn't explain this at all.

I also think that Sci-Fi fans would especially enjoy this movie.

Summary of Paycheck (Special Collector's Edition)

WHAT SEEMED LIKE A BREEZY IDEA FOR AN ENGINEER TO NET HIM MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, LEAVES HIM ON THE RUN FOR HIS LIFE AND PIECING TOGETHER WHY HE'S BEING CHASED.
The brainy, paranoid science fiction of writer Philip K. Dick has inspired one visionary classic (Blade Runner) and two above-average action movies (Total Recall and Minority Report). Paycheck aspires to follow in their footsteps: An engineer (Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy) routinely agrees to have his memory erased after every job so that he doesn't know what he's done. But after the biggest job of his life, he discovers that not only has he refused a $90 million paycheck, he's sent himself an envelope full of things he doesn't recognize--and he doesn't remember doing any of this. As he unravels the plot, he discovers he's also fallen in love (with Uma Thurman, Kill Bill) and invented a dangerous device for his former boss (Aaron Eckhart, Erin Brockovich). Affleck is bland, the script ruins a cunning idea, and the direction--from the normally dynamic John Woo (Face/Off)--plods along, aimless and bored. --Bret Fetzer
