Movie Reviews of Pay It Forward

Movie Review: Sometimes Life Gets in the Way of Our Humanity
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has an excellent moral that can really change your life if you will apply it to yourself.

After receiving an assignment at the beginning of the 7th Grade, Trevor (Osment) plans out what he will do to for his project. He comes up with Pay it Forward, doing a good deed for 3 people and they in turn for 3 people and so on without repaying the deed done for them to the person who did it.

Trevor gets discouraged and feels like he is a failure when his plan doesn't work out exactly as he had hoped in the beginning. As the plot unfolds the true magnitude of what was started is realised and only in the end does Trevor see that his efforts were successful.

The plot does tend to jump around a lot, but this is not annyoing if you pay attention. It is a revelation to the viewers to show the magnitude of what unfolds that is beyond Trevor's immediate observation and the lives that are touched as a result.

The writing, acting, and directing are all top-notch. My only regret is that I would not have prematurely judged this movie based on the seemingly inadequate title and trailer, because then I would have seen it 6 years ago instead of this morning on TBS.

Movie Review: An emotional, beautiful movie.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've seen the movie 3 times now; It wasn't my intention, but it was worth every viewing. I was extrememly impressed by all three of the major players, Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and of course Haley Joel Osment. The end was a shock and really moved me emotionally like no other I've seen in a long while. Haley's performance could only be topped by his role in the Sixth Sense; a very talented young actor who knows how to reach into the character he plays and literally make you believe the pain, the sorrow, all the emotions his character must be feeling. His acting is like no other...he should have won the Oscar for Sixth Sense.

Although I've not cared much for Helen Hunts role in the tv series Mad About You...I was pleasantly surprised by her acting in this movie. She's an excellent actress in every respect and I believe she shows up on this one better then past works.

Kevin Spacey was excellent as well, although I've seen better from him....The Usual Suspects.

Over all, the movie is one you can't miss. Bring some tissues. You will definitly cry, but you'll laugh and 'aw' and...you'll love the movie and just won't forget it. Waiting patiently for Amazon to release it to the shelf on DVD...

Movie Review: A Movie That Will Inspire You to do Good to Others
Summary: 5 Stars

Oh man! This is a such a powerful movie. Starring Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, Haley Joel Osment (AI, Sixth Sense), and James Caviezel. To have the noble idea started by a little kid makes it more compelling. He came from a broken family with only her mom to support him. Reminds me of the song "You And Me Against The World" by Paul Williams. Her mom (Helen Hunt) struggles everyday between alcoholism and survival for herself and her family. When the teacher (Spacey) gave an assignment to his students, Trevor came up with a simple idea. Paying a favor not back, but forward, and not to one person but to three. Not only he gained the attention of his teacher, but also his mother who is the most important person in his life. Initially he thought it was a failure. But soon, the idea spread from city to city and then the whole nation. It became a crusade and changed the world around him. It is very inspiring that it encourage you to do good to other people. For some people, which includes me, this is one movie that affects you deeply and may be thinking afterwards for weeks.

Movie Review: ONE FROM THE HEART
Summary: 5 Stars

When PAY IT FORWARD came out in 2000, I had the misfortune to read the review by the vitriolic Lisa Schwarzbaum in Entertainment Weekly. Ms. Schwarzbaum hated the movie and showed her disdain and disrespect for her readers by telling how the movie ended..she felt it was her duty. So even though I knew how it would turn out, I find myself five years later viewing the movie, and I found it quite well done. Whether its ending is "justified," "manipulative" or "way overboard," I find the movie's message powerful and in the end, hopeful and resonating. Haley Joel Osment, who has been one of our most effective child actors, is perfect as the little boy whose class project has far-reaching results. Kevin Spacey as the burn-scarred teacher is poignant as a man who cares but is afraid to show it; Helen Hunt is amazing as Haley's Mom, an alcoholic battling her own demons. Brief bits by James Caviezel, Angie Dickinson, Jay Mohr and even Jon Bon Jovi add to the picture's narrative, and maybe I'm a sucker for maudlin schmaltz, but this one's from the heart and I found it emotionally powerful.

Movie Review: Pleasently surprised; a feel-good film.
Summary: 5 Stars

PAY IT FORWARD is indeed a little-known and underrated masterpiece. It's about a young boy named Trevor (Haley Joel Osment) who lives with his young alcholoic single mother, Arlene (Helen Hunt). The two don't get along very well because Trevor is concerned about his mother's drinking problem, even though she claims she doesn't have a drinking problem. Then Trevor goes to 7th grade and meets his social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet (Kevin Spacey), who puts an extra credit assignment on his board for his students on the first day of school which is to find a way that they can change the world. Trevor takes this assignment seriously, and tries to help the people who are less fortunate than him. He even tries to get his mother and Mr. Simonet to fall in love.

I saw this film on Pay Per-View and thought it was truly excellent. The all-star cast also includes Jay Mohr and singer John Bon Jovi. With a good solid plot and a likeable talented cast, what's not to like about this film? PAY IT FORWARD is a unique and delightful film with a surprising ending. Definitely worth viewing!
