Movie Review: Many Parallels Can Be Drawn Summary: 5 Stars
I just saw "Paths of Glory" for the first time. I was channel surfing and ran across it during the huge battle scene when the order was ultimately given that served as the basis for the movie. I never heard of this movie, but was drawn in by the fact that a young, Kirk Douglas was featured.
I began thinking that this movie's message was arguably just as powerful as "Platoon" or "Saving Private Ryan." As I watched, it reminded me of a verse in Pink Floyd's "Us and Them":
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.
I also drew a connection between this movie and contemporary, corporate culture. Rank and file workers treated as mere commodities and often aimlessly sacrificed as scapegoats for irrational, greedy and damaging decisions of upper management.
Lastly, this movie eloquently shows that no matter how absurd a charge is, the verdict is always in question. Even in matters of life and death... and how the pending deaths of others are perceived by those (mis)placed in command. Even 51 years later, this movie still makes very valid and timely statements.
Masterful directing and superb acting. It's a movie that I want my children (18, 21 & 22) to view. I easily gave "Paths of Glory" 5 stars.
Movie Review: paths of shame Summary: 5 Stars
Watching Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" is a schock and disturbing..Its amazing to see a movie 35 years old be so impressive and so actual. We've seem the insanity of war in manny great movies, but Paths of Glory has something else. Its Kubrick, its a genius screenplay,is Kirk Douglas in one of his finnest moments and a wonderfull cast. There were great pacifists movies like Johny get your Gun,and others, but Paths of Glory shows how scary, manipulative and dangerous is the search for power. How obcessive and insane is the war and the ones who make it. Yes the ones who make it.The ones behind the desk,or in theirs buildings playing with "ordinary" people's life. Its amazing how actual the movie still is. We are living a dangerous moment in our history, were a lot of hipocrysie and insanity is taking over. We talk about war, about enemies whose we dont know ecxactly who they are, but we attack no matter what. Its about a dirty glory, were there's no sense at all. Films like Paths of Glory made me think if this game for power is still playing. Its so clear that still is.How wrong some leaders, generals and politicians are. They should all see this movie and reflect that war never was and never will be a solution for our problems. This movie deserves a five stars medal condecoration. Salut!!
Movie Review: One of the Best WWI Films and Years Ahead of its Time Summary: 5 Stars
People will get to Paths of Glory in three ways: Either as Kubrick fans interested in his early work, Kirk Douglas fans, or those interested in WWI. Whichever way got you here is good. This is one of the finest written, directed, and acted anti-war films ever.Yes, its a war film, buts its really an anti-war film. During the Vietnam War and after anti-war films became quite popular in the US, Kubrick's Paths of Glory was light years ahead of its time with the anti-war message. Alls Quiet on the Western Front gives the same message but a lot of people, myself included can not sit through a movie that old. Also having read the book so many times, Paths of Glory is a different story with a similiar anti war message. WWI was one of the most tragic wars in that not only was the war itself not necessary but its battles were so bloody that they wiped out an entire generation of Europeans. Kirk Douglas acts up a storm in this movie. And watch him in this and look at his son Michael. They look so much alike. Again, this is a short, intense, unforgettable movie. I highly recommend watching and owning this DVD. Also, as a teacher this is a great film to use in the classroom on WWI. This and Gallipoli are great classroom tools for teaching WWI. WATCH THIS FILM!
Movie Review: When the leadership at the top is rotten!!! Summary: 5 Stars
As a retired army officer and an adjunct history professor I thought it was important to review what I consider the best war movies depicting the challenges of leadership and the command of men.
Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" depicts the futility and irony of the war in the trenches in WWI. French battalion commander Col. Dax (Kirk Douglas) must deal with the mutiny of his men and a glory-seeking general after part of his force falls back under fire in an impossible attack. In this mesmerizing film, the director Kubrick (one of the best) highlights a true episode in World War I which combines the idea that class differences are more important than national differences with the cannon-fodder theory of war, the theory that soldiers are merely pawns in the hands of generals who play at war as if it were a game of chess.
I am a huge WW I buff and I impress upon my students the criminal neglect of the British and French generals to properly lead their men. They lost over 60,000 men in the first day of battle in the Somme. The Viet Nam wall has 55,000 names of the men we lost in over 10 years fighting. That was the scale of the gross failure of leadership depicted in this very important film!!!
