Movie Reviews of Party Monster

Movie Review: Throw a little glitter on it and go dancing
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVED this film. I knew of Alig and had seen "Party Monster-The Shockumentary" and wanted more. Well, "Party Monster" delivered.

Mackauly Culkin and Seth Green have both received scathing reviews of their portrayal of the wacky Club Kids Michael Alig and James St. James. They have been called plastic, over the top, and just plain too queer. Well, what better describes these two real-life larger than life characters? The actors' affected, stiff portrayals are a brilliant interpretation of the constant theatre put on by such infamous Club Kids. I used to be annoyed by Culkin, but after this, and "Saved" he has joined his brother Kieran at the top of my list of great actors. I can even forgive Seth Green his MTV affiliation after this performance.

To continue, the casting was sublime and Marilyn Manson was a stroke of genius to fill the sparkling platform shoes of Christina. The costuming was dead-on and avoided looking too "Hollywood" by maintaining that home-made quality to the outfits that were originally fashioned by broke kids. The soundtrack was appropriate but never obvious, a trap many 1980's period films fall into. The script was funny, objective, shocking and even touching at times. The cinematography was well done and I especially enjoyed the film angles in the hotel room bathroom and out of the rat's hole.

In short, I loved it.
Favorite line: "That's not a crack hole, it's a rat hole. Rats on crack attack!"

Movie Review: Realistic, Energetic, and Extremely Entertaining!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is best suited for those who are at least interested in the club kid lifestyle and tolerant of homosexuals. I've read a couple harsh reviews, but they seem to have been written by people who have no clue what the party scene or NY club scene was about and are more concerned with judging than understanding this vastly different sub-culture. Some reviewers have even called the movie unrealistic, but this couldn't be further from the truth.

The parties are portrayed with incredible accuracy. The movie not only depicts what you could expect to have seen inside a club of this type, it makes you feel as though you are actually there taking part in the event. The lighting and colors used create a slightly dazed feeling, as though you're walking through the middle of a huge party, surrounded by a sea of eye-candy. The party goers are true to life as well. After all, they used old club kids as extras and featured some of them in their real outfits.

The drug sequences are almost too accurate sometimes, especially the come down. (At one point, they even show Alig sitting on the toilet saying, "I can't pee." For those who've been there, this totally hits home.)

Honestly, if your plans for the weekend include sitting at home with the kids and watching a movie, this probably isn't your best bet; but if you're looking for an adventure (or if you were once a part of the scene and would love a nostalgic reminder of your past experiences) you really should see this film!

Movie Review: VAPID, EMPTY, AND HILARIOUS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is what a great drug flick should be: vapid, empty, and hilarious. Bad acting, lots of good drugs, and stupid drug-addled criminal behavior. What more do you want? Lot's of plot holes, but drugs can do that. I'm on the fence about the acting. Over the top for sure. But, the actors were obviously playing their characters as posturing attitude cases. They even take pride in their shallowness. Extreme, to say the least. Drag queens aren't postering emotional attitude cases are they? Noooo. I have an old friend who's just coming out of the transgender closet and he's an emotional basket case. He thinks everyone hates him now, and the sad thing is, they do. He's not quite as messed up as these two boys, but he could have lent a supporting role. Although I'm not a big fan of transgender films (What straight male is?), I am a big fan of doper flicks and I have to say, this is going on my list of the best in PURE DRUG CINEMA. Wicked, funny, and depressing. I still want to bite Marilyn Manson in his white eye. Not quite as good as 2003's WONDERLAND but much better than REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

5 STARS FOR DRUG ABUSE. I wanna party with these boys.
5 STARS FOR COMEDY. Best lines: "It's not a crack hole, it's a rat hole." And,"Congratulations on your first O.D."
3 & 1/2 STARS FOR DIRECTION.
2 STARS FOR THE CAT. Awww...
and 5 STARS FOR STUPIDITY AND SHEER LUNACY. GREAT STUFF!!

Movie Review: Great flick!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely adore this film! While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, I think this is a well put together interpretation of James St. James' novel "Disco Bloodbath." If you haven't read the book, I recommend doing so. It is an acid trip in itself. I saw a 20/20 episode discussing the movie and was intrigued. I finally got to watch the movie and was shocked and slightly disturbed the first time I watched it. The beginning is excellent. Its light and airy and pulls you into the fast, colorful world of the Club Kids. Then, the film turns dark quickly as drugs take over the main characters lives. The end is quick and I believe the murder scene is well filmed. I believe that the actors were well chosen and Mak does a wonderful job portraying Michael Alig. Seth Green as James St. James is halarious. If you read "Disco Bloodbath" you get a better understanding of James and Seth's interpretion is on the mark.

All in all, this film is excellent if you are interested in Club culture at all, or enjoy interesting movies that are not necessarily the norm. I love this movie; its one of my favorites. I've shown it to all my friends (college kids) and they love it as well. I have not heard one person I've shown it to (with an open mind) say they did not like it.

Highly recommended to RENT FIRST!
The book and soundtrack are also highly recommended.

Movie Review: Mac all grown up....
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard about "Party Monster" when it was being made from a friend. I was instantly interested because of my own experiences as a"clubkid".It wasn't until resently I saw the film.I wasn't familar with the Michael Alig crime at all. I truly enjoyed this movie so much I bought it the next day.I was not old enough at the time to experience the original Limelight days, but the directors did an excellent job capturing the vibe and to make the viewers feel like they were there.
The friends I watched the film with complained about Mac Culkin's performance. To be completely honest, I thought he was excellent, and very believable. I did not agree with the casting of Wilmer Valderrama as Keoki. If anyone reading this knows anything about DJ Keoki in real life,I'm sure you would agree with me.For one, Keoki doesn't have a South American accent, and he totally is not that down to earth.(Afterall, he is a superstar DJ!LOL).
With that aside, I would tell everyone to at least see Party Monster once. In my collection, it is now a classic.
