Movie Reviews of Papillon

Movie Review: Epic Filmmaking
Summary: 5 Stars

On top of the fact that it has been solidified that Steve McQueen is the "king of cool and action" of the 1970's and 1960's. It's always best not to forget his more challenging films with so much character development and intimacy like Papillon is. I only wish this DVD had more extras and got a better special edition treatment than it did, but we all can't be winners. Nearly all of McQueen's films got that treatment in the past year or so, including my favorite Bullitt. Dustin Hoffman's early career proves to be impossible to top with The Graduate, Straw Dogs and this as well. I simply can't stress enough how great this movie is, upon first view many years ago, I couldnt take my eyes off the screen. That sentiment is still very much the same as I have the ability to watch this film now over and over and it still hits me the exact same way.

Movie Review: 2 different ratings?
Summary: 5 Stars

I just watched this movie for the very first time. I'm a Steve Mcqueen fan, and I always wanted to see this movie. It's one of Steve Mcqueen's best. Steve Mcqueen plays Papillion, a man who was framed for killing a pimp. Dustin Hoffman plays a man who was envolved in a money scam. The two men meet in the french prison and bond after time. I almost didn't want this movie to end it was so good. Papillion faces a lot of hard times in the prison. But in the end his hard work pays off and he escapes. I do have one question, this movie rated "R" on this website. But I went to Walmart and purchased a double feature movie dvd of Steve Mcqueen. "Bullit" and Papillon"
On the back it said Papillon was rated "PG". I don't buy Rated "R" movies, so I don't know what's going on. Did they change the rating? Or was it a miss print?

Movie Review: Sad but then uplifting story of yearning for freedom
Summary: 5 Stars

It's hard to imagine anyone surviving the penal colony of French Guyana, let alone escaping it. Papillon and two others manage to do so, but then there are twists and repercussions.
Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are Papillon and Degas, respectively, in this story of two prisoners who end up in a hellhole, with one having to be in solitary for a couple of years--and longer, later--while dealing with bad food, horrible weather, and indifferent guards.
The movie is quite long at 2.5 hours but it does not drag or become dull. You will be riveted at every minute, hoping for these guys to escape.

Movie Review: A Testament to Human Will
Summary: 5 Stars

I've always felt that this film has never received enough recognition, but every viewer has his own perspectives and tastes. I've always had a taste for films of detail and real life, like "All Quiet on the Western Front", "The Pianist", or "Schindler's List".

It's a true story of one man and his refusal to submit, and of those around him that were sent into exile to the French Guyanas during the 1930's. The peoples of this film were real and lived.

If you give this film your attention and time, I think that you will walk away with more than just a viewing, but an impression.

Movie Review: One of the best movies EVER made.
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like adventure movies, if you like movies that are excellently casted, if you like to root for the underdog... this movie is for you. In fact, if you are a living, breathing human being, this movie is for you. It is a wonderfully acted intriguing story... and is or should be in the ranks of must see movies like Casablanca or Seven Samurai. Do yourself a favor and at least rent this!
