Movie Reviews of PET SHOP BOYS - POP ARTMovie Review: Unsurpassed videos, mediocre commentaries Summary: 4 Stars
I've been a fan of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe ever since "West End Girls." Pet Shop Boys distinguished itself from other 1980s bands in Tennant's vocal restraint, Lowe's masterwork at the instruments, and the pair's genius at writing catchy pop music.
Their lyrics often touch on themes of lost love, society's superficiality, aging, and mortality. Their videos range in approach from serious and highly artistic affairs to wild self-parody. For years I have longed for DVD-quality editions of their videos, and now I happily have them.
Unfortunately, the accompanying commentaries by Tennant and Lowe offer few behind-the-scenes memories of the videos, nor much explanation of why a given visual approach was taken with each video. Instead, Tennant and Lowe simply make fun of themselves in between long silences that could have been better spent explaining the motivation and development of each song and video.
Listening to Tennant and Lowe mock their own costumes and performances, in video after video, I was left wondering, "Well, guys, if you hated doing each video that much, why did you do them that way?" I was disappointed in particular at their shallow treatment of "Being Boring," "Go West" and "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Sort of Thing" -- all of which are favorites of mine.
If you enjoy the Pet Shop Boys, I highly recommend the DVD -- but the commentaries add nothing substantial to the collection.
Movie Review: Pay attention Pet Heads... AbFab is missing!!! Summary: 4 Stars
To whom it may concern, the video for "Absloutely Fabulous" is missing in this compilation... a huge disappointment for both PSB and AbFab fans, not only because it's hilarious but also it would've completed the video collection. I wonder if there were some legal issues that prevented them from including it in this release... I bought the NTSC region-free edition, made in the UK to my surprise. Unlike other people, I am completely satisfied with the 2.0 dolby digital audio track, these songs were never meant to be listened to in a sound output format other than stereo, the audio commentary is a plus. The image quality is fantastic and the extended versions of "Go west", "Domino Dancing" and "So Hard" are a pleasant surprise. Maybe a little more extras like the old "MTV Essential" interview would've been nice, but I'm not that hard to please! I really don't mind about not having the latest video releases ("Miracles" and "Flamboyant"), if it hadn't been for the misterious exclusion of "Ab Fab" it would deserve 5 stars.
Movie Review: From Cheese to Works or Art Summary: 4 Stars
What can I say? This has everything... Well, almost... The dvd does not inlcude their two new songs. It's a toss up sometimes to see old videos because they usually do not live up to their former glory in your head. I hate to admit it but I like their newer videos more because of the production value and the thought that went behind them. I find their earlier videos to be a bit cheesey--okay, you can say this to just about every videos from the early eightees...
The overall graphics for the dvd is good, the interactivity is fun and the group's commentary were often almost hilarious and at times, insightful.
This is one of the best music dvd's I own.
Movie Review: haven't stopped playing it Summary: 4 Stars
Before buying this dvd, I pretty much had only known the American top 40 tracks. I never knew just how much I hadn't heard or seen. The Commentary section is not to be missed, but make sure you have a martini or two beforehand so that you are on the same wavelength that it sounds as they were on. "Go West" is powerful and great visually. "Always on my mind" is just so entertaining. "Domino dancing"....whew when you hear the commentary you'll appreciate the video even more. If you're thinking about buying it, just do it, you will not be disappointed.
Movie Review: Great tunes, great videos, less than great production Summary: 4 Stars
I, like most others here, am a big PSB fan. Love to watch the music vids. They are great in and of themselves, but when I popped the DVD in the player, I see that the aspect ratios need to be adjusted, even for the widescreen videos (I have a widescreen TV). Fortunately my DVD player can adjust the picture size to compensate for situations like this. Maybe the DVD was designed for a full-screen (4:3) TV. In any case, it should have taken advantage of current DVD encoding technology to allow for more seamless, proper aspect ratio viewing.
