I loved this flick and have been hoping to catch it again on Sundance Channel, but they're not running it any more. It's not for everyone I suppose, with its meandering moodiness and extended, sometimes single-shot sequences in which little "action" takes place. But it's a real gem if you can go with its laid-back groove. "Oyster Farmer" is very different from most Hollywood flicks, and that to me is a compliment. It takes place in the swampy river country of Australia, among working-class Aussies, sweaty and salty - this is not the high-society of "Picnic at Hanging Rock." It is a character-driven cross between comedy and drama that revolves around the growing tensions and suspicions that develop among a group of oyster famers, one of whom may be a thief. The relationships seem genuine and are played beautifully, especially the palpable sexual tension between O'Loughlin and ... Diana Glenn, I believe her name is. The film is a real treat for the senses, too, managing to be gritty and polished, artsy but accessible at the same time, with a brooding, even mysterious tone and a lush, beautiful music score. The plot of "Oyster Farmer" revolves around some stolen loot and one man's efforts to recover it. There is a message here too, delivered with charm and sincerity, about redempton and finishing what you start. This film takes its sweet little old time to get where it's going, so while there is some action, if you don't enjoy movies that meander a bit you may find it boring. Obviously I did not. It's also nice to see a really different region and culture of Australia than what I at least usually see in Aussie flicks. I absolutely loved this movie and have been looking in vain to buy it in video stores for over a year.
