Movie Reviews of Over the Top

Movie Review: Easily the best Arm Wrestling movie of all time!
Summary: 5 Stars

Over the Top is exactly that, over the top. The clever title is an obvious double-entendre in that it's a story about arm-wrestling that is completely ridiculous; yet, it somehow manages to be a highly enjoyable movie with real, albeit unanticipated, drama.

Amidst the preposterous father-son bonding, in which a borderline mongloid named Hawk (Sylvester Stallone) shares a long-haul trucking get-together with his son, as well as the finer points of arm wrestling - via a pulley system generically rigged up by Hawk (pun intended) - there is one the most comical, unbelievable scenes in movie history. While stopping for a bite to eat at a greasy spoon diner - in which Hawk's prissy, weakling, snowflake, WASP son preaches about the benefits of health food - Hawk decides that it is high time his son proves his worth and strength via an absurd arm-wrestling match staged between his son and a tough, street kid on top of a pinball machine. I'll let you be "surprised" by the outcome.

The ultimate arm wrestling showdown seems more like a collection of carnies or psych-ward patients than a group of competitors in an arm wrestling tournament. There is a pretty good chance that there was no blood testing at the time of this event, and if there were, more than one guy would be found with horse steroids or psychotropic drugs in his system. The favorite of the competition, Bull Harley, who seems like a villian in a video game because of his epic proportions, probably has stool bigger than Hawk's arms. Through sheer will and determination, Hawk manages to spin his hat around and channel the energy of 100 suns in order to win the title.

I'd feel bad about the spoiler if it weren't so painfully obvious and insignificant. The pleasure in this movie is the journey, not the destination. It's a great, mindless movie, and I watch it nearly every time it's on late-night TV.

Movie Review: Does it really get more B than a movie about an arm-wrestling truck driver? I didn't think so.
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! I mean, where to begin? Ok, first good old Sly Stallone is the star of the show, as well as co-writer of the screenplay. If that doesn't scream B to you then you're just not listening. There are just so many elements of B in this one. Namely the fact that they can't even decide if Sly's character's name is Lincoln Hawk or Lincoln Hawks. Then there's the great parenting skills displayed by Sly. The first time he sees his son in 10 years, he takes him to his big rig and tries to arm-wrestle him. The aforementioned big rig is equipped with a Lincoln original forearm press machine so he can hone his arm-wrestling skills while driving. Pure genius!

Hawk is going to need the practice to face...Bull Hurley! This imposing 5 time world arm-wrestling champ's mantra is "I drive truck, break arms, and arm-wrestle." How you can take that in and not be rivited, I'll never know. Sid the Elf noticed something watching Over the Top. Most of Sly's movies are pretty much the same premise with interchangable plots and characters. To the B novice, Sly isn't the first name that comes to mind, but think again. Sly is that rare person who has a big name, but is really B with very few people making the observation. But thats what we, Sid the Elf are here for.

This classic B flick easily recieves the Sid the Elf Seal of Approval. Do yourself a favor and buy this one for years of priceless entertainment. This movie is a great choice for the novice B viewer due to it's sheer ridiculous content. What other film can you find a competitor whose pre game meal is a cigar and a jug a valvoline motor oil? We could go on until next weeks B review, but we'll end here. Again if you are up for a good old fashioned B evening, pick up this work of art. Just a heads up, be on the look out for a packed month of Sly reviews most likely starting in August.

Movie Review: Step aside, Citizen Kane. There is a new NO.1!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Normally I'm not one for hyperbole, but I have few qualms stating that Over the Top is among the greatest arm-wrestling movies of the last half-century. Jam-packed with emotion, adrenaline, and the kind of edge-of-your-seat action that only two stationary, grunting men can provide, it's easy to see why many call it the "'Gone With the Wind' of wrist-endurance sport movies".
Like every screenplay written by Sylvester Stallone, Over the Top boasts a challenging and all-too plausible script-- in this case a cautionary tale about a sensitive trucker seeking to find redemption, the love of the son he abandoned, and most importantly, a new truck, through arm-wrestling. And while most actors and/or filmmakers would scoff at the idea of tackling such hot-button issues as overcoming the scars of child abandonment through competitive bicep-grappling, the fearless cast and crew of Over the Top are unafraid to take this plunge. In fact, they treat their subject with a reverence and photo-accurate attention to detail unmatched in modern cinema, so much so that it's easy at times to forget that you're watching a work of fiction and not a documentary.
The emotional roller-coaster that is this film also provides yet another showcase for Mr. Stallone's spine-tingling acting chops, as his emotional, monosyllabic father-son scenes remain some of the most courageous ever captured on film.
Attention Hollywood: the ticket-buying public has spoken. And we expect Over the Top's return engagement to a theater near us sooner rather than later.

Movie Review: You Can't Beat THIS..... Finally ITS HERE ON DVD!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me just start off by saying what the hell is wrong with movie studios nowadayz? It took Warner Bros. this long to release the greatest movie of all time... Give me a break! Warner Bros. will re-release movies in 5 different editions but we Over the top fans can't get a single bare bones release? Anyway I'll stop my complaining because its Finally here. This has to be one of Stallone's most underated movies of all time. Stallone is probably the only person who can make a movie about arm wrestling and make it just as exciting as a Rocky or Rambo flick. This movie has it all, pressure, failure, love, and trust. This is deff. a good father and son bondage movie too. Stallone basically arm wrestles at local bars to make some sweet dough, he finally realizes he has a talent and should take his arm wrestling career alot further than anyone could imagine. So what does he do? He enters an arm wrestling competition to win a new truck and his son goes along with him too. He inspires Stallone to become the baddest, roughest, pugnacious monster alive. Great action great acting....Even though we did get a dvd release, the extras are pretty poor, a decent trailer is all you get, I was deff. expecting a Stallone commentary or possible a behind the scenes would of been nice. Well at least its in a nice anamorphic widescreen!

Movie Review: Over The Top
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always thought that this was Stallones best movie. All of his other movies he plays a tough macho guy. In this movie he displays emotions that cause this to be one of his best movies. My father never liked him, but when he saw this movie he said that Stallone really impressed him. Stallone plays a down to earth trucker who had married into wealth. Him and his wife got a divorce and his son was sent to a military school. His wife is in the hospital about to die and she wants Stallone and her son to get to know each other. Of course the boy starts off being a smart a** brat who hates his father due to the brain washing of his grandfather. But by the end of the movie the son (as well as other fans of Stallone) come to love him. Stallone shows the caring side that he don't display in other movies. Awesome movie and I am glad that it is finally coming out on DVD. Well worth the watch and adding to your collections
