Movie Reviews of OutlanderMovie Review: One of the better Beowulf movies. Summary: 5 Stars
There are many Beowulf films. Beowulf staring Christopher Lambert is the worst followed by the not so great CG animated Beowulf (Unrated Director's Cut). However, Outlander isn't even in the same class as these two films. In fact I think it's nearly as good as The 13th Warrior (based on Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead).
The first thought I had when renting this at my local video store was "great...another aweful Beowulf movie", but I was pleasantly suprised when it didn't suck. In fact this movie was pretty awesome!
Part of that was the casting. Jim Caviezel(The Passion) is a terrific actor, and this isn't like any other role I've seen him in. He really pulled off the action hero in this flick. Jim plays a spaceman or time traveler? John Hurt (Alien, 1984) plays a Viking king and Ron Pearlman (Hellboy) stars as a rival Viking tribe leader. I only wish Ron Pearlman had had a bigger role. However, what really suprised me were the special effects.
I expected the cheap CGI you get on crappy Sci-Fi channel B-movies. While the CGI isn't fantastic it's still pretty good; the creature in this movie looks great. When I saw it for the first time I was satisfied. It's not going to blow your mind or anything, but it's light years ahead of the craptastic Christopher Lambert version.
Special features are standard fare, but they are there if you're interested.
This is definatly a sleeper hit. If you enjoy alien monster flicks and Viking movies you're in for a treat. I loved it. I can't believe Rotten Tomatoes only gave this a 38% fresh rating. What do the critics know anyway! My wife liked this, and she's hard to please when it comes to movies.
Summary of OutlanderIn the year?s most action-packed sci-fi adventure, Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) stars as a futuristic soldier who crash lands on Earth with a hellish, fire-breathing monster in a time of warring Viking tribes. Fusing advanced technology with Iron Age weaponry, he must unite the fierce Vikings and hunt the bloodthirsty beast before it kills them all. Featuring Ron Perlman (Hellboy films), Sophia Myles (Underworld films), and John Hurt (Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull), Outlander is ?visually spectacular? (Michael Wilmington, Chicago Daily Herald), combining stunning special effects, fast-paced action, and a fantastic story to explosive effect.
