Movie Reviews of Out of Time

Movie Review: An Entertaining Flick
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a thriller that is pretty good. It is certainly no classic, but it is quite enjoyable.

Denzel Washington appears as Matthias (Matt) Whitlock, the corrupt chief of a small town (Banyan Key, Florida) police department. His wife Alex (Eva Mendes) is divorcing him. He is having an affair with a married woman, Ann Harrison (Sanaa Lathan) whose husband is very abusive to her.

Ann and her husband are apparently murdered in an arson fire. Matt and his department are not the lead investigators, but he is assisting. Although he is ethically challenged, Matt is apparently not the killer, but more and more of the evidence points to him as the suspect. He is under a lot of time pressure to keep ahead of the investigation and try to find the real killer while avoiding arrest himself.

Although several of the plot elements are implausible, all in all, this is an entertaining thriller.

Movie Review: A good whodunnit
Summary: 4 Stars

Nice to see Denzel Washington go low key. OUT OF TIME is a terrific little movie for viewing at home - nice Florida Keys setting, good acting by Washington, Eva Mendes, Saana Latham, John Billingsley (especially), and Dean Cain (at long last in a bad guy role). This little potboiler has more to say about 'coincidence', misplaced trust, moral integrity or lack thereof, and the power of relationships to endure a lot of bruising than it has substance to drive a big story. What begins as a smalltown police chief weazling his way around another man's wife while still holding feelings for his own estranged 'new detectice' wife becomes a snappy stroll through the ins and outs of fraud, theft, lies, and murder. A great movie it is not, bu OUT OF TIME holds its own in the current DVDs available. And it is nice to watch Denzel Washington just do some ensemble acting. He is very good at it!

Movie Review: Loved The Colors, Liked The Film
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of the few Denzel Washington movies that flopped.....but I liked it. For most, it was just didn't hit a chord with moviegoers, although I'm glad to see a bunch of Amazon reviewers that liked it. For many, though, the film as a whole wasn't up to Washington's standards.

Being someone attracted to good visuals, I loved the colors in this film, set in South Florida. The orange-and-greens were beautiful and I enjoyed the music, too. It all elevated the likability of this modern day film-noir for me. I have to admit at one point I began wondering "when is something violent going to happen?" However, many 1940s film noirs were like this (building up tension until the end) and I'm a fan on those old noirs.

Thus, I still found this DVD pretty interesting most of the way, with a nice twist at the end, too!

Movie Review: Denzel scores big in this steamy thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

Yes, the plot is farfetched and a police chief cannot possibly be gullible enough to steal drug money to fund a girlfriend's operation in this steamy, south Florida film noir thriller. To make matters worse, Washington's estranged wife, the beautiful Eva Mendez, is assigned to investigate the disappearance of the confiscated drug money. As fate would have it, the feds pay a visit to Washington and demand the drug profits that already went up in smoke, literally, along with Washington's girlfriend, the wife of one of his officers. Naturally, Washington winds up on the run, hunting down insurance claims and trying to piece together what happened and to make sense of the mess he got himself into. There are some good action sequences and a nice feeling for the humid south Florida communities reminiscent of "Body Heat" and "China Moon".

Movie Review: Entertaining movie
Summary: 4 Stars

In this movie, Denzel Washington plays the police chief on one of the small Florida Keys. He is in the process of a divorce and is having an affair with the wife of an ex-football star. His paramour finds out that she is dying of cancer and decides to change the beneficiary of her insurance policy from her husband to Denzel. When her body is found inside her burned house, suspicion turns to Washington. To complicate matters, the detective who is investigating the case is none other than his estranged wife. If this isn't complicated enough, there are a couple of other twists and turns along the way. The best performance in the film is undoubtedly that of John Billingsley who is hysterically funny as the usually tipsy medical examiner. This is a slickly-produced film and its fast pace makes it an entertaining one.
