Movie Reviews of Out of AfricaMovie Review: Wonderful movie Summary: 5 Stars
I didn't see this movie when it came out in 1985 - but I wish I had !
Fantastic scenery (shot in Kenya) and a terrific performance by Streep, Brandauer and Michael Kitchens.
This was based on a true story about author Isak Dinesen (not certain about that spelling; her pen name was Karen Blixen. Or maybe its the other way around).
It helps to know a bit about the story beforehand; and also something about colonial Africa. Otherwise it may not hold your interest (I'm thiking especially of younger adults).
Biggest drawback is Redford's character Denis Finch-Hatton. Finch-Hatton was and Englishman but Redford makes no attempt at a British accent. Redford is a limited actor, and while he has the right rugged good looks his accent messes up the character.
I highly recommend this film.
Movie Review: Nothing is worse than your true love appearing when you are tethered to another Summary: 5 Stars
Another reason NOT to marry just for business reasons. Being a Baronness leaves Karen Blixen's heart hollow until Denys Hatton arrives. Doomed love is often our own making. Don't marry for poverty of the heart!
Set in the rustic hues of the stunning African scenery, this memoir-based film is about the great love of Karen Blixen's life. After marrying a distant Swedish cousin for an artistocratic title, Karen and her husband move to Africa to start a plantation, only to find herself alone and in love with true love Hatton. Though their love is deep it is doomed as well and ends when Hatton dies in a plane crash.
Goes to show that often the obstacles we have to love is of our own making. Do not marry someone unless BOTH of you are certain it is true love or you are BOTH DOOMED!
Movie Review: Cinematic Perfection Summary: 5 Stars
This film takes Karen Blixen's work to new heights. It vibrantly captures the Africa that Karen knew and her relationship with a man who introduced her to his passion for the wild land. The film is beautiful and paints the scenes of Africa with such artistry it will take your breath away.
Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are equally wonderful in their portrayals of the lion and the Danish writer who tried to hold him. In the end all she has to keep him alive are the words she writes, comforting her in her solitude.
There is just something magical that happens when I watch this film. The musical score is so rich, the scenes so gorgeous...there is simply nothing that compares to the moments of absolute cinematic perfection this film achieves.
Movie Review: Out of Africa - Film review Summary: 5 Stars
If you're a Sydney Pollack fan you'll sure enjoy this film. Out of Africa, besides the excellent performances of Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, will certainly get your attention with the astonishing landscapes of Africa. The story is about the life of Karen Blixen, who gets married for convenience and moves to Africa where she starts running a plantation. Things start to go wrong when her husband starts being absent often and cheating on her. Karen, eventually, falls for a hunter, Dennis, but she demands more of the relationship than he is ready to offer. For Dennis his freedom is essential and in the end you're faced with the unexpected. You can also count on an extraordinary soundtrack and photography, so it is a film that is really worth seeing!
Movie Review: Redford, Streep--Great Romance Summary: 5 Stars
The film is based on the life and writings of Baroness Karen Blixen, a Danish woman who, fearing that she would be single forever, married her lover's brother, and moved to Kenya in East Africa. While there she starts a coffee plantation and struggles with maintaining her physical and emotional health and meets a big game hunter named Denys (Robert Redford)--a man in love with stories. This film is a cinemagraphic beauty. The African landscape is breathtaking. The chemistry between Redford and Streep is perfect. Well acted and scripted , the film draws you in. The tension between the two fluctuates from friendship and intrigue and desire with romance. Their meetings becoming more intriguing as the story unfolds.
