Movie Reviews of Out of AfricaMovie Review: One of the Greatest Masterpieces of Modern Cinema Summary: 5 Stars
This story unfolds giving the audience an extrordinary view into the mind, life and times of its' heroine, Karen Blixen (played to perfection by Meryl Streep), and captures the essence of what it means to be steadfastly stoic in nature, despite the surrounds and conditions that befall herself and characters central to the theme.
Robert Redford while starring blends an incredible balance.
The movie leaves the viewer with the impression they have just witnessed an almost Rembrandt type painting in every shot.
No review can do this 2 hour 41 minutes collectors edition justice.
Winning 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1985 somehow now seems trivial (in a time when other movies were bringing in box office dollars by comparision, for example Cocoon and Back to the Future) this movie is pure quality and enduring. In what must have been and was certainly a mammoth task to recreate the ambience of 1914 Kenya, Producer and Director Sydney Pollack captures on screen what it is to live, love and lose and somehow, despite all tradgedy, to still win.
I will go so far to say that this is probably in the top five greatest movies ever made- if not the one!
Movie Review: "One Of My Favorites!" Summary: 5 Stars
"Out Of Africa" has always been one of my all-time favorite films. Rarely has a movie excelled in all components of the cinema, everything from the acting to the direction to the story. Meryl Streep plays a woman named Karen Blixen who marrys a philandering man in Kenya. Soon, Karen falls in love with both the land and a white hunter, played by Robert Redford. The movie depicts Karen's story on running a coffee plantation, the problems she encounters in running her business, and her love affair with this mysterious man who has stolen her heart. "Out Of Africa", based on a true story, swept the 1985 Academy Awards, winning for Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction, and Sound. The music to the film is one of the most haunting in film history and adds to the intense drama. Roger Ebert says, "Out Of Africa" is one of the great epic romances". The special edition DVD comes with commentary by Pollack, an original documentary entitled "Song Of Africa", the trailer, and production notes. The film is 2 hours and 41 minutes, and the sound is 4.1. Simply, a perfect movie.
Movie Review: A romantic movie I understand Summary: 5 Stars
Several years ago, I watched the "End of Innocence," I believe a Martin Scorcese movie, a story of unrequited love, filled with yearning, caught by societal roles and a desire never fulfilled - and for me a waste of time. And it is in the confronting, and making peace with the issues noted above that makes "Out of Africa" a poignant and powerful love story. A story of a couple who were true to themselves and their love despite the "rules" of society. People who triumphed not only against the restrictions imposed on them by their peers, but whom also faced and moved beyond the barriers they placed on themselves. They paid the price...but what a privilege to be in love - a profound and liberating love. I suppose that some would say that they paid for their insolence as evidenced by their eventual separation and Fynch Hatton's death, but I find that the decision to be true to themselves...and love anyway, the mark of true love. Well acted, well written and a credit to two remarkable people - pioneers not only in Africa but also in spirit. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: The Best Movie Ever Made!! Summary: 5 Stars
So Often when I ask people if they've seen this movie, they say no. I'm shocked at that, as it is, for sure, the best movie ever made. In its day it won 7 Academy Awards! First of all the acting, the scenery, and music are superb. But the story, based on the true adventures of an amazing lady will touch you forever. For Ladies, if you've ever been a woman seeking idealistic love or a woman trying to being successful in your professional efforts, you will relate to Karen, her life, her joys and her frustrations. For men, you will relate to that need men have to keep their safe distance from matters of the heart and to go out and be adventurers. Also, it may help you understand the complexities of women. I warn you both though, this movie will give you a yearning to visit Africa. I recommend you watch the director comments and especially the music comments, then go back and watch it again and again. I recently had the pleasure of meeting director Sydney Pollack and told him i've seen it about 22 times, he told me that was a record!
Movie Review: My absolute favorite movie of all time ! Summary: 5 Stars
This story would touch your heart, even if it wasn't based on true life events. The breath taking scenery and beautiful music are rival to Dances With Wolves.Meryl Streep gives another great performance in her role as Karen Blixen, a woman who just can't seem to get a break in life. Set in the early 1900's, she deservingly earns respect from the native and foreign citizens (including the men) - unheard of at that time. Robert Redford is definitely the handsome leading man once again. Despite great resistence from Blixen, Denys finally wins her heart but refuses to "commit" the way she wants him to. This ultimately ends the romance but not the love affair. Several years ago, I taped the "uncut, director's version" of Out of Africa. There are several important scenes I've been unable to find elsewhere, including the Collector's Edition DVD. They develop intricate relationships with several other main characters. If you ever see that version, you'll know what I mean.
