Movie Reviews of Out Cold

Movie Review: Surprisingly funny trifle - should have been a lot worse!
Summary: 4 Stars

"Out Cold" should be a terrible, terrible movie. Made for a shoe-string budget (what little money they had was obviously spent on pop soundtrack licensing rights and helicopter guys for extreme snowboarding shots) and with absolutely no ambitions whatsoever other than to bring a few laughs, this movie should have ended up in two-star, $2.99-bin territory.

Problem is, the darn thing is funny.

Loosely (and humorously) based on the immortal "Casablanca," "Out Cold" is a classic retread of various "Spring Break"-type movies, set on the ski slopes of "Bull Mountain." The usual group of horny guys who just wanna have fun have to stick it to the man who wants to go corporate with their treasured home. If there's an original plot line in this movie, I've yet to find it.

But what the movie does have is some flat-out funny stuff. Ever hang out with one of those guys who doesn't tell great jokes or anything, and yet he's always got people laughing around him? That's "Out Cold."

The under-rated Jason London plays Rick, head of the local snowboarders/stoners. He's got three good buddies and a local gal who's quietly gorgeous and perfect for him. But he pines for Anna (stand-in for Ilsa from "Casablanca") with whom he shared a great spring break in Cancun. And Anna "miraculously" shows up in Bull Mountain as the daughter of the semi-evil Lee Majors, essentially playing himself as the corporate guy eager to bring sushi and black ties to this blue-collar Alaskan ski town.

You can tell a lot from the cover of "Out Cold" - you've got sophomoric sex and alcohol related humor, a stereotypical blonde bombshell just too eager to drop her top (former Playmate Victoria Silvstedt), and some pretty good snowboarding action.

Perhaps it's because the movie's PG-13 and doesn't go for the uber-gross-out humor that would have landed an R rating, but there's some surprising wit to this movie. Look for plenty of semi-buried "Casablanca" homages and some genuinely funny laughs.

This isn't a great comedy, but one that far exceeds the surpassingly low expectations it sets.

Movie Review: Out of this world comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

Winter sport and comedy lovers will find this predictable but hilarious. We all know the story. The cute misunderstood guys get their mountain (ski resort) in the end but the way they get it is very funny. Naturally there's a bad guy who tries to buy the mountain and commercialize it, and there is a love triangle just to appeal to everyone. The extreme skiing scenes will make you feel their pain while you're laughing. Don't let any of this keep you from seeing it. If you like comedies you owe it to yourself to see this one.

Movie Review: Ri-diculous fun!
Summary: 4 Stars

I think this movie kick some serious booty. Everything about the hi-jinks make me laugh. For instance, speading salt over a passed-out man's genitals and laying him in the woods, sans pants, to let a bear lick the salt off his nuts--HILARIOUS!

One thing that I enjoyed was the late 80s-ski-school-dazed-and-confused-slacker charm the movie had. These guys have a good sense of humor

Movie Review: funny movie
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is a great movie full of laughs, i saw it a while ago and remembered it being good, so i bought it from amazon. I watched it again and it still was good, but it's not amazing, i kind of built it up to be more than what it is! But it's still a great flic! I'd recommend it for a good laugh!

Movie Review: Out Cold
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is funny and light hearted. It follows in the tradition of the ski comedies of the 80's and makes it contemporary. I could do without the sappy love story drama, but that probably makes it more palatable to female viewers and there is enough guy humor to offset it.
