Movie Reviews of OthelloMovie Review: Fishburne ranks with James Earl Jones as Othello Summary: 5 Stars
Laurence Fishburne carries Othello off powerfully. He is as good as James Earl Jones was in this same roll. His voice pitch, diction, and control are remarkable. He clearly is the scene-stealer and he dominates this movie powerfully.
On the other hand, I was disappointed with Branagh's portrayal of Iago. In part, I have a hard time imagining Branagh's face as other than that of a cherubim. His eyes do not have the malevolent hold that evil would dictate. He was scheming, a Kissinger-like figure, but he never really conveys the object of his scheming--the destruction of Othello.
As for the lead reviewer's criticism of the sexuality in the movie, fuggedaboutit. Don't worry. Your kids have seen worse on HBO. Besides, is there anything more strongly connected than misplaced power, jealousy, and sexuality? Haven't we found this out in our modern age? The difference is that in our age, the abusers are not noble or tragic; they are just pathetic and empty men.
Great rendition, costumes, music, and supporting actors. What's to not like?
Movie Review: The best version I've evern seen Summary: 5 Stars
When I first read that Laurence Fishburn starred in this version of Othello, I was slightly disappointed. I know Fishburn from his early films which included "Boys in the Hood" and "School Days" However, from the moment he appeared on the screen, Fishburn took ownership of the title role. He played with such convincing passion and jealousy that I was mesmerized by his portrayal of "the Moor." I know I will watch this film over and over. The sets, the costumes were very authentic, and added tremendously to the film's attempt to capture the time period of the play. The implications of Iago's homosexuality was a bit comical and could have been presented with more subtlety than satirically. I would have preferred the implication of inherent jealousy. Iago is a great character and very complex. Overall, the production was first rate.
Movie Review: Surprisingly excellent Summary: 5 Stars
For anyone with even the slightest appreciation of Shakespeare this movie is one to watch. The performances are strong without being overbearing. The emphasis always seems right and the flow is almost perfect. Fishburne surprised me as the Moor, his presence and sensitivity were just right. I had previously not given him credit for this much depth as an actor, but his interpretation is excellent. Branagh's tone is light and scheming and in essence the perfect Iago. Jacob's Desdemona was presented with such clarity that one might almost forget they were listening to old English. I had not expected a lot from this movie and came out feeling it to be the among the best screen adaptations of Shakespeare to date.
Movie Review: A True to Life and History Performance, Brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
Mr. Fishburne is riveting as Othello, bringing the pain and jealousy that the character dealt with to life. I find it amazing, however that his blackfaced counterparts are given a higher rating then him for the role. Nevertheless Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branaugh play beautifully together in this modern adaptation. As a brief commentary on the man who seemed a bit miffed about the "Moor", I would like to point out that not only were the Moors black, making Mr. Fishburne a prime choice for the part, but also in Shakespears time, anyone of African features and very dark complexion was referred to as a Moor. Check your history. Again, loved the movie.
Movie Review: Fishbourne was flawless Summary: 5 Stars
I found the movie was wonderfully done. Fishbourne's performance was brilliant. I am concerned about those who reviewed the movie and gave all the accolades to Kenneth Branaugh while mentioning the lead role in passing. Isn't the play called Othello? I'm also still wondering how Orson Welles, could be considered to have rendered playing the role of a black character better than a black man. Regardless, I loved the movie and would recommend it to any Shakespeare enthusiast.
