Movie Reviews of OrphanMovie Review: The New Definition Of The Evil Child In The Horror/Thriller Genre! Summary: 5 Stars
In this age of computer graphics and special effects came this little gem, which needed not rely on either. As well, it is only right that I mention that for a horror thriller, the performances were fantastic. The plot keeps the audience interested throughout the film.
There are similarities between this and a few other films. The Good Son starring Macaulay Culkin at first came to mind.
From the atmosphere all the way through to the plot...this movie truly delivers!
I have viewed this film twice at the theatre and it was just as good the second time around as it was for the first.
The young actors in this film are as good as the adults and it's the acting that brings this film out of pure mediocrity!
The Orphan is a welcome edition to the horror/thriller genre and is not a film that you are likely to forget once you see it!
Compared to many of the horrible horror films that make it to theatrical release...this film was worthy of being released theatrically!
The film's character is more sadistic than 'The Good Son' and more evil than 'The Bad Seed.'
This is not Damien from The Omen series...but Esther can hold her own in the world of evil movie children.
Sure, there have been many, from The Children of the Damned all the way through to The Children of the Corn.
Whatever the case may be...there's something very special about Esther!
I can't recommend this movie enough to fans of the genre!
The family's home is beautiful, as well as the Canadian scenery used to add another special quality to this film which would otherwise be lacking!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I felt that most everything that was included in the film was needed to further the plot along.
There were no elements of it that weren't necessary.
Whether it was meant to establish the relationship between the husband and the wife...and their issues, or the parents' relationship with their children...it was all NECESSARY!
In the end, all the elements come together and we are presented with a film that amazes us, surprises us and maybe even frightens us a bit!
There are funny moments throughout that provide us with a sense of dark humor, but when it comes down to it, this is not a funny film, but a deeply disturbing movie!
It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout it's 2 hour running time. In fact, I hated to see it end.
I will revisit this little treasure again, as well as adding it to my personal movie collection!
There are a few surprises thrown into this film that might surprise you.
It will keep you on edge and you WILL genuinely care about the characters in the movie.
Having seen numerous horror thrillers, I believe that this added something special to the genre that we don't see very much: a talented cast of actors giving it all they've got in order to make a believable movie for the audience to enjoy!
Great acting in a horror thriller is few and far between!
This film is definitely NOT for children and although this is not a gory picture...it is still very disturbing!
I am particularly fond of movies that can touch us emotionally, and yet, disturb us as well!
You feel the love of the parents for their children and vice versa.
As well, the relationship between the parents is very well written and it adds a dynamic to the new developing relationship between Esther and her new dad!
At the same time that mom and dad are drifting apart...it is helping to bring the developing father/daughter relationship closer together!
Being that Esther is so manipulative...she had dad playing right into her hands...or so she thinks. At the same time...she makes it look as if mom's prior alcohol problem is beginning to resurface again!
The young actors in this film are very convincing and as they are threatened, scared and concerned for their lives...we see it in their faces and they portray their roles with much accuracy!
The role of Esther was brilliantly portrayed by Isabelle Fuhrman.
It is probably the best single performance of a child actress in the history of this genre!
However, I truly hope that this role does not come back to haunt her...as her acting is very versatile...so Hollywood should take notice of this up and coming STAR!
All in all, you will be impressed by the acting skills of the entire family in this movie!
They all gave 110% to their roles!
The Orphan is a disturbing film guaranteed to keep you entertained the entire time you sit in front of the screen.
The movie is guaranteed to throw a surprise at you before it's over and I doubt very much that you figure out what it is!
The characters are very well developed and the character of Esther was brilliantly portrayed. There is a sense of innocence present...but beneath the facade lies a very dangerous, manipulative and sadistic personality!
Isabelle shows great ability in her portrayal of this complex character!
The movie offers much sentiment early on and this helps us later to care for the film's characters more than we would if they hadn't been so well developed!
It seems that this little girl is intent on tearing her new family apart.
She does her best to fit in...but it's difficult for a disturbed child like Esther to make friends...much less to keep them.
Mom and brother suspect that things are not as they seem and over the course of the movie, we realize this as well.
The intriguing thing is that the audience cannot wait to see what will happen next...and that's how I knew that I was witnessing a great film!
I was truly surprised as the movie went along with many of the twists thrown into the mix.
This is a five star thriller with fantastic actors and a fantastic script.
As the movie's tagline says, "There's Something Wrong With Esther."
As well, there is something wrong with you if you don't see this movie!
Enjoy! Highly Recommended!

A bad seed with a Russian accent, 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is a nasty little girl with a nasty little plan. Unfortunately, this malevolent tyke has landed in the home of adoptive parents Kate and John (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard), an unsuspecting couple with two kids of their own and considerable grief over recent family tragedies. It doesn't take long for Esther to make her creepy presence known, as broken limbs on the playground and torched tree houses can attest. Give this movie some credit--the psychological underpinnings are all set carefully in place: Maternal trauma? Check. Backyard pond as emotionally charged danger zone? Check. Feminist parable about husbands not listening to troubled wives? Check. The casting of reputable actors such as Farmiga and Sarsgaard also ups the movie's class quotient; Farmiga in particular has an emotional workout, and this gifted actress strikes few false notes even as the scenario becomes increasingly lurid. (There's some déjà vu here: Farmiga also played a mother realizing her kid was "not right" in Joshua, a much superior film.) Director Jaume Collet-Serra, of House of Wax notoriety, knows full well the unsettling weirdness of seeing a child commit murderous mayhem, and he presses all the buttons with something like unholy joy. The movie begins to drive off the rails even before a clumsy twist hits the fan near the end, and at that point, the mechanical exercise becomes downright silly. The Omen's Damien has nothing to worry about. --Robert Horton
