Movie Reviews of Orca - The Killer WhaleMovie Review: An Incredibly Gorgeous and Sad Film Summary: 5 Stars
"Orca" is one of the most gorgeous and saddest movies I have ever seen in my life. The first time I saw this film, I was incredibly moved by the sadness of the male orca over losing his mate and unborn calf and Captain Nolan's eventual finding of empathy for marine mammals. The plot is wonderful but quite scary as well. Scenes of the male orca on the attack can send chills up one's spine. At one time, I even thought Bo Derek really lost her leg. No animal is as powerful as the orca itself. The orca is much smarter than the great white shark could ever be. Its prey respects and fears the animal simutaneously.
Richard Harris, Will Sampson, Charlotte Rampling, Bo Derek, Keenan Wynn, and Richard Carradine all turn in wonderful performances in their respective roles. However, the best performances go to the orcas themselves, Yaka and Nepo. Residing at Six Flags Marine World, Yaka and Nepo did wonderfully as orcas in love. They were perfect for their roles because Nepo was quite interested in Yaka, as I have heard from different orca websites. Unfortunately, they have since passed away. Nepo died on 7/10/80, and Yaka died on 10/29/97. May Nepo and Yaka forever rest in peace.
"Orca" will drive you to tears as you watch it. You'll feel as if you are swimming with the orcas to Ennio Morricone's incredible music score. I have loved this movie since I saw as a teenager. The visuals are breathtaking, as is the musical score. It may not be all that original, but it is a saddening and gorgeous film you need to see.
Movie Review: Better than Jaws, big time! Summary: 5 Stars
It's better than Jaws in the sense of the deep message of this very powerful film. Yes, it's a mammal like the shark in Jaws. Yes, it kills like the shark in Jaws. People want to kill it, like the shark in Jaws. However, the big difference is that here, unlike Jaws, the one who seeks justice is not the human being, but the mammal. In Jaws the man seeks revenge over so much murder the shark is causing. In Orca is the mammal who's seeking revenge for the same reason. Unlike Orca, it's easier to get the point in Jaws. It's easier to understand humans when we're the victims, but it's harder to understand mammals when they're the ones suffering for our ambitious deeds, and that's the power of this film.
The music is magnificent, marvelous. The acting is extraordinary. I think it's the best performance by Richard Harris from all the movies I've seen of him. I saw Orca when I was around 13 and I cried througout the whole film when i saw it. I still cry when i see it, especially during that scene where the male orca pushes his already dead female mate to the shores followed by his fellow orcas. You can hear them crying all along. The ending is crucial, breathtaking. This movie is powerful and it leaves you with the message of not messing up with nature. I loved it.
Movie Review: Heartwrenching and PROFOUND. Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie on TV about 5 years ago. I went out and rented it after that and have seen it two more times on TV since. I don't watch a movie to cynically nit pic at anything I can find wrong with it but look for the meaning of a movie. This is not a movie for the kiddies or squeamish! The message is clear: DO UNTO OTHERS!! and... that orcas are extremely intelligent and have very strong family bonds. Obviously, the movie was made to terrify it's viewers. The irony that, when this movie was made, humans didn't know much about orcas, yet we now know that the way this orca must have FELT is probably realistic. I think Nolan realizes that this is not just some dumb creature and that wanting to capture it and take away it's freedom and family was the biggest mistake of his life. I also think that even in the end, Nolan respects it as a being in it's own right. You might want to think about that next time you visit Sea World, eh? The Orcas that we keep in captivity for our entertainment are only caricatures of their true selves.
Movie Review: Never Slight An Orca! Summary: 5 Stars
Richard Harris intends to merely capture and sell a male Orca, but accidentally kills a female of the species that happens to be pregnant. The mate of the pregnant Orca seeks revenge. Harris, ashamed at his mistake, has no intention of confronting the male Orca despite the fact that Harris is now being stalked by the aquatic monster! To force Harris' hand into combat, the outraged Orca sinks several fishing ships and graphically bites off one of Bo Derek's (a mate of Harris) legs. Harris now has no choice; he must confront his enemy in its environment.
This movie not only has well-executed action sequences, but a heart-breaking sequence of the dying Orca and her mate that will leave a lump in the throats of even the most hard-boiled male viewers.
Orcas, as we're reminded in the movie, have larger brains than humans, and their embryos resemble human embryos with hands! While Orcas can be gentle, they will defend themselves. The movie's theme: Never slight an Orca!
Movie Review: The Saddest Music Piece Ever Summary: 5 Stars
It's True this is the saddest yet most effective movie i have ever scene (And i Will do A part of the review on the soundtrack)
Plot- Awesome and Clever Plot, When a Fisher named Noland captures and kills a whales mate the partner will try any thing possible to get his revenge (andn yes Charlotte Rampling helps him try to cope with his problem)
Acting- very good acting such as Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling, and Will Sampson
Gore- not much, a severed leg, and (spolier alert dont read ahead if dont want to know or havent seen) a whales baby comes out (dead) and falls to the ground (but it is very shocking)
Soundtrack- Carol Conners is the greatest, and so is this music, it is so deep and powerful
Bottom Line- 5 out of 5, definatly one of my favorites
