Movie Reviews of Operation Petticoat

Movie Review: One of the best
Summary: 5 Stars

Operation Petticoat is one of those movies that makes you laugh no matter how many times you see it. The cast is led by none other than Cary Grant as the commander of a decrepit submarine, caught behind the Japanese advance in the Pacific, trying hard to sail her back to safety and repair at a US base. Grant makes a fine picture as a tough yet sentimental commanding officer. In counterpoint is Tony Curtis as a totally amoral rascal with a talent for getting things done, usually by breaking all rules. Despite their mutual dislike, the two have to work together to get the sub home and the result is a truly bizarre voyage. Curtis' expertise in scrounging supplies for the damaged sub extends to a group of stranded army nurses, who predictably create havoc on the submarine. And as the sub approaches safety, it improbably ends up as a maternity ward to the consternation of Grant and the delight of the crew. I would hate to spoil the surprises but let me say the manner of the sub reaching safety is simply hilarious. Of course, all ends well - this is a movie after all - and the right lessons are learned by all. A great movie to laugh over with some superb dialog lines for Grant in particular and a string of great one-liners all around. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Operation Petticoat

I won't go into plot details that others have already covered. Cary Grant and Tony Curtis are priceless. I read that Bob Hope turned down Cary Grant's role- glad he did, because it wouldn't have been the same. Cary was probably better in "Father Goose". In this film he basically plays straight man to everyone else's comedic timing.

I think the ages of various actors in the movie is a point of contention. At the first, when Cary Grant flashback/morphs from a middle-aged admiral to a Sub Captain of 25 years before, he doesn't really look any different. In one scene he mentions his grey hair to Joan O'Brien. At the end of the film, they don't really do anything to age her, although she'd be nearly 50! In another scene Virginia Gregg and Dina Merrill are discussing their ages. Dina says she's 24 (she was actually 34 at the time of filming!) and Virginia says she's 38 (she was really 43 and looked older!). They didn't really age Dina either at the end, though they wouldn't have had to do much.

The movie is a nice and light-weight comedy. Plenty gets shot up, but no one gets killed, and war-buffs will actually find some valuable footage of Fleet submarines.

Movie Review: All Hands will Emergency Surface with Laughter
Summary: 5 Stars

My favorite part of this hilarious Cary Grant and Tony Curtis romp was when Tony Curtis reports for duty to a WW II submarine in his dress whites. The rest of the crew -- greasy and grimy from trying to get their critically damaged boat into good enough condition to limp to another friendly base laugh their heads off when looking through the periscope they spot Curtis looking a little out of place on the busy pier. However, much to their surprise, Curtis proves himself invaluable as the boats "Supply" officer who does an unequalled job in "procuring" the badly needed parts for the boat in early supply shortened portion of the war in pacific. Come to find out this smoozing, angle hunting "idea man" who had been on the Admiral's staff and "Champion Rumba Dancer" (with the Admiral's wife) really was a street-wise guy from wrong side of the tracks in NY City.

And to top it off the Boat ends up with stranded Army Nurses all this makes for a great movie -- how the submarine ends up pink and how they torpedo an enemy truck I will leave to you find out. Do yourself a favor and get this movie. What a hoot!

Movie Review: Slip in a tena lady and you'll be fine......lol
Summary: 5 Stars

WOW!ok, so i'm a massive Tony Curtis fan, but this film is actally the most bizarre, hilarious film ever! The general synopsis has been given in plenty of detail by everyone else, so i'll just rave on about HOW funny this film really is...Now, i have to confess, my personal favourite scene has got to be the one where Tony Curtis steals a pig off some indonesian farmers farm and dresses it in a naval officers uniform and tries to smuggle it onto the submarine by saying it is drunk - thus to explain the rather unusual sounds which emante from beneath the sea mans overcoat! It just keeps snorting, and then he locks it in the loo to hide it and.... well, lets just say that those with weak bladders should stay away from this film - although in all fairness it is probably ALOT funnier at 4 am after much wine has been consumed...*coughs* lol. Well, this is a spectacularly unhelpful review - just WATCH the film! ooo! and also try and see one called "Space Truckers" which features Charles Dance as a half robot thing, uttering the immortal lines: "If i had an anus i would soil myself...." Classic.

Movie Review: Who played Seaman Hornsby?
Summary: 5 Stars

Director Blake Edwards is a master at this sort of movie.

You have seen the basic story many times, however never as funny as this version. The action takes place during WWII in the south Pacific. Cary Grant is Commander Matt Sherman of the Sea Tiger, a not all too gather well submarine in need of repairs and lead paint. Tony Curtis is Lieutenant Nicholas Holden, an executive officer that is not too ept at sea duty but makes a procurement officer with unique abilities and methods of obtaining needed parts. Toss in a few nurses, some goats and you have the makings of an interesting situation.

I was interested in finding out who plays Seaman Hornsby? He was a real pig.
