Movie Reviews of Open Range

Movie Review: Movie Excellence
Summary: 5 Stars

It sadens me to think there are people that 'don't get' this film or think 'it's slow'. It's not slow, it's paced. Beautifully paced. There is a big diffence. I'm guessing the people that think it's 'slow' prefer their movies more like Wild Wild West with Wil Smith. So be it. As not much of a 'western movie' watcher, my partner beg, stole and borrowed to get me to watch this. I was so glad he did. After thinking Unforgiven was terribly over-rated, I was so thrilled after watching Open Range. Classy, stylish and passionate. I felt for all the characters within the first ten minutes, which is more than I can say for most movies being churned out where you don't care about any of the characters throughout the ENTIRE movie. Costner and Duvall work so well together, with a shy respect and appreciation of each other's characters. The gun fight at the end has to one the best ever in movies. I actually cheered in places. Everything in this movie made sense. The backlash was justified with the gunfight at the end of the movie. This is truly a superb film and enjoyable for all. If you didn't enjoy it, go watch a Rob Schneider film. More your level I guess.

Movie Review: OPEN RANGE
Summary: 5 Stars

Open Range is just a wonderful film. It has a very well written script and of course the flawless diector Kevin Costner who does such an excellent job. Also Staring Kevin Costner,Robert Duvall and Annette Benning and a wonderful surport cast. I can not fault the film with its beautiful locations. The script and direction from Kevin Costner really brings everything together. The story is so sweet and heart warming. The poor little dog ruuning around so cute and then killed so sadly and animal much loved by the men and the nice touch of placing in the grave of his killed frind, so very lovely. The way Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall really cared about each other and all in the film. The caring of another person. The love for Annette Benning which is heartwarming and her love back something we all wish for. The fight of the men to ovecome violence and their love for their wounded friend and death of another. It was nice to have happy ending for a charge. On of the great films directed by Kevin Costner and staring it. I feel this film should have had really good press as it is a winner. So much love in the film but not one grain of sugar.

Movie Review: Don't waste trust from a man like Charley on a card game
Summary: 5 Stars

The high points of this excellent film are simultaneously the stillness and simplicity of the Montana-like (Western Canada) background with again, the simplicity and strength of the dialogue. The two men, Costner as a Shane like character, traumatized by his past-trying to go 'straight' and Duvall, scarred also by a past who finds "getting lost" in the bigness of the late 19th century country comforting, work together like few actors can and do. Wryness, not one liners. Advice not mandates. A simple code of freedom and justice spoken in a cafe by Duvall, not Costner.

Costner, content to play second role to Duvall's experience in the role, and quite possibly in his skill as an actor.

Duvall is as good as he's ever been and Costner better than he's been in years.

Simple plot, right and wrong colliding a 100 years ago a 1000 miles from here. The love interest is a stabilizing factor, adding credence to what good men need, drawing out a painfully shy Charley (Costner) and the curmudgeon Boss (Duvall).

The best western in years, on par with The Unforgiven and Tombstone, perhaps better. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury

Movie Review: The way a Western should be..
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie on AMC about a 1/4 of the way through and next thing I know was ordering it from Amazon. As other reviewers have said the movie moves slow and for good reason. Not only do we get to know the characters but it also captures the mood of the old west and makes you feel as though you are on those long and lonesome cattle drives.
The scenery is beautiful and the performances are all superb. Costner is excellent as the strong, silent cowboy and Duvall excellent(as usual) as the weathered cattle boss (has there ever been a better cowboy? with apologies to the Duke and Clint)
Briefly, Open Range tells the story of a free grazing cattleman(Duvall) and his hands, who run afoul of a corrupt local land owner(another great performance by Michael Gambon) who fences in the land and decides the best fate for the free grazers is death and the stealing of their herd.
When two of the hands are attacked they decide to take a stand and fight.
The film ends with hands down the best and most realistic gun-fight ever filmed. All in all a top notch western and well worth watching.

Movie Review: The Awesome, Openness Range of Both Beauty & Drama!
Summary: 5 Stars

We were watching after a long tiring day of teaching, a weekend of being with too many wonderful people! Then we got to behold the Awesome, openness Western range in beauty drama of powerful acting! Duvall was Perfect as The Boss! Kevin Costner, Potent and Powerful Actor of subdued rage in his relived early life as reminding us of his submerged feelings of killing real people not so much as killing the scum-of-the-earth people!

As one who has seen and dealt with long-term prison inmates, I have never been so close to such pictures of an eye-for-an-eye and a tooth-for-a-tooth! The sudden revealing of the accepting, loving, sister Annette Benning in role of Doc's assistant made the connection that some people seem to be worth only killing since they have acted-out their rage on Innocent Persons!

We did not realize what a jewel of a picture until her loving acceptance of Costner as an OK killing agent of judgement! No matter how many reviews written, nothing I saw in most that I disagreed, other than: "Too Long! It Needed to Be..."
