Movie Reviews of Only YouMovie Review: The Italian landscape steals the movie from the stars Summary: 5 Stars
If you love Italian culture, and the Italian landscape this is a must own film. Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr. and Bonnie Hunt give good performances as usual.
This has been one of my favorite movies for years. The story line is not going win any awards but somehow that does not matter. The characters are warm and seem like people that we have all met before. And the scenery, ahh, is any place on earth as beautiful as Italy? Not in my opinion.
The gist of the movie is that a young woman (Marisa Tomei) travels through Italy looking for a man with the "right name" that she believes she is suppose to marry because a fortune teller told her so when she was a young girl. Her brother's wife (Bonnie Hunt) travels with her to Italy. While looking for the man with the "right name", they run into Robert Downey Jr. who lies about being the man with the "right name" to keep her from leaving Rome. When Downey tells Tomei he isn't Mr. Right, the chaos continues as he sets how to prove to her that Mr. Right, isn't right for her.
The movie is filmed throughout Italy. It begins in Venice, moves through the Italian countryside (which appears to be Tuscany), then to Rome, and finally to the beautiful Amalfi Coast and the lovely little town of Positano. Watching this movie reminds me of my beloved Italy every time. I have seen this movie at least a dozen times and never get tired of watching it again.
The Italian character Giovanni is so reminiscent of the Italian men that I have met in my life. The scene particularly amused me where the waiter is asking if Bonnie Hunt's character was upset that her husband was having an affair because it "was with her best friend or her sister." And when she said "no, of course not", he praised the husband for being "descreto" (discreet). Yes ladies, this is truly how Italians think. Beware when you travel in Italy alone. But be warned, Italian men seem to all be not only charming, but extremely attractive. These men can be hard to resist.
If you were planning a trip to Venice, Rome or the Amalfi Coast this would be a lovely film to watch before going because it uses the Italian scenery as lovingly as an additional character in the movie. I highly recommend this film to anyone that loves Italy, or wants to love Italy.
Summary of Only YouWhen Faith was 11, she asked her Ouija board to spell out the name of the man for her. The answer--Damon Bradley--was someone she had never heard of. But days before her marriage, Faith receives a call from her fiance's old school friend... Damon Bradley! And on this slim lead she flies to Italy to track him down. While director Norman Jewison's Moonstruck is a romantic cornerstone, this 1994 film is often overlooked. It's a sweet valentine about a young woman, aptly named Faith (Marisa Tomei, never cuter), who chases an unknown man to Europe because the name "Damon Bradley" was once spelled on an Ouija board as her true love. With her sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt, whose own marriage seems to be falling apart), she travels the streets of Rome looking for Damon Bradley. And lo and behold, she literally runs into a man claiming to be Damon. Is this meant to be? Faith certainly thinks so. Robert Downey Jr. (also never cuter) plays Damon in a role that showcases his charms. He shows his quick wit in handing Faith's advances and his absolute devotion to her when the winds change. Despite the cuteness factor, this is a movie to fall in love with. Jewison and Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cameraman) present a sun-kissed Italy so beautiful, you might be tempted to hop a plane immediately after viewing the movie. --Doug Thomas
