Movie Reviews of One Magic Christmas

Movie Review: My favorite Christmas movie of all time.
Summary: 5 Stars

"One Magic Christmas" is a true classic, an underappreciated gem of a movie whose reputation will only grow as time passes and those of us who grew up watching it gain influence over popular culture.

Forget "It's a Wonderful Life" and the rest. This is the best Christmas movie ever made.

Mary Steenburgen turns in the performance of her career as Ginny Granger, a woman who's lost not only the Christmas spirit but also her very soul amid financial problems, family issues, and the pressures of modern life. Its up to Christmas angel Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Santa Claus, and Ginny's own children to help her recover what she has lost.

The movie's plot is certainly dark, and a box of kleenex may be necessary for some scenes. The writing is superb and the acting first-rate throughout.

The alternate-reality loop (from when the lights go out to until the lights go back on) is a fairly unique device in mainstream Hollywood films (especially Disney ones).

Despite the rather dour situation the Granger family finds themselves in during most of the film, their series of unfortunate events has a very heartwarming - even triumphant - ending. And just when you think it's going to wrap up, the film gives you one more treat - as Ginny gets a glimpse of a very special Christmas visitor.

This movie is well worth the price. Order it today and experience what I believe is the best holdiay picture out there. Five stars!

Movie Review: Beautiful movie that has been in my life for many years
Summary: 5 Stars

I was about 6 or 7 when I first saw One Magic Christmas and none of the scenes bothered me nor did I think it was ok to talk to random strangers I believe that the little girl in the movie wouldn,t have talked to just any stranger either she could feel that Gideon is an angel and that she was safe, this movie is just pure magic, being low income all my life I understand Ginnys feelings of frustration but having money has nothing to do with having the Christmas spirit in your heart or believing in Santa as Ginny finds out. When Abbie goes to the North Pole it is one of the best most magical Christmas moments of any film ever, this movie is Disney at their best. Walt Disney smiles down from heaven on this movie. This movie to me is as much about believing in God as it is in believing in Santa. It is purely magical beautiful touching and will make you cry and I think it is perfectly safe for kids they will learn things about the harsh realities of life but also learn that keeping your faith and beleiving in the beauty and magic of Christmas , and in God can and Will change lives. If you dont have this movie already I recommened you get it right away you will never regret it and will end up seeing it as many times as I have which is well into the 100s AMAZING MOVIE I PROMISE YOU!

Movie Review: A special Christmas gift
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife loved this movie when it was first released in 1985. A poor quality VHS tape made off TV later was a staple of our Christmas viewing for years. When the cassette eventually got lost, we searched for it each year on cable or on-demand, to no avail. On a whim this Christmas, I checked Amazon to see whether it was available on DVD and was thrilled to learn that it was.

In short, One Magic Christmas is the story of an angel (Harry Dean Stanton) who must show a mother (Mary Steenburgen) the true meaning of Christmas, something that has gotten buried under life and circumstance. It's not just presents and material things, but the people she cares about. Perhaps the best gifts are having empathy and charity for others and hope and faith for a better tomorrow.

I made sure the DVD was the last gift my wife opened this Christmas. She was shocked and happy at the same time. We watched it that evening, and with tears still in her eyes, she said it was the best gift she had received. The DVD brings the image quality up as much as might be possible with a 1985 movie, and looked great on our HD, wide-screen TV.

Movie Review: Could alter your life
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not just a great Christmas movie, it is a great movie. The style is an unusual mix of fantasy and realism. The ending is a series of emotional triumphs made the more so by Mary Steenbergen's acceptance of the power of magic to inform and give meaning to daily realities. It is an existential journey to faith.

Two other things I would mention relative to other reviewers. The child molester image of the Gideon character was not apparent at the time. In retrospect it may have been better to have a female angel, but Gideon is effective in his humility and soft-spoken nature.

The other thing is that other reviewers mention the special effects. I saw this movie in the theatre and it was amazing. I was overwhelmed by its power. It was nominated for an Academy Award in cinematography and won in that category in Canada

I really wish someone would show a clean copy on the big screen again. As it is I have watched the movie every year since as an annual rite.

Movie Review: My children laugh...my husband sighs...
Summary: 5 Stars

but I simply HAVE to watch (what my teen-aged daughters dubbed, "Kids Fall in the River and Drown") this movie every single Christmas. I know of no better movie to imbue one with the true thankfulness and appreciation that is the Christmas Spirit than this gritty, occasionally depressing, but ultimately redemptive and glorious film.

Some years we watch with too much empathy (years when we've faced financial insecurity or lost loved ones). Other years we watch with abundant gratitude and happiness (so thankful we're safe, warm, secure and surrounded by each other). Whatever the case, whatever the situation, however much my long-suffering family rolls their eyes as I produce this film, we always, always end up teary-eyed, filled with love and hope, and totally, completely satisfied we've had one MAGIC Christmas experience.

I'm going to buy the DVD to replace my VHS, so I can continue to "inflict" this classic on my family for years to come.
