Movie Reviews of On the BeachMovie Review: Depressing, but Engrossing Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the most disturbing films I have ever viewed ... almost as disturbing as The Passion of the Christ. Nevertheless, it is an important film and a worthwhile watch since the doomsday scenario portrayed is indeed very possible -- much more likely than an asteroid striking the Earth and wiping out all of humanity. The powerful anti-nuclear message of this film should be heeded by the dozen or so nations currently possessing nuclear weapons. To know that something as simple as a computer glitch could set off a nuclear holocaust (which very nearly happened in November 1979) has caused me many a sleepless night. The Australian producers of this film deserve praise for making a strong statement about the insanity of nuclear war and its dire consequences for all mankind.
Movie Review: A good, updating of the best nuclear war story Summary: 5 Stars
I, too, have awaited the DVD release of this film and found no trouble with the transfer. Even if the transfer was poor, however, the power of this story, which still might come true, overpowers any problems with the DVD's limitations. This film makes "The Day After" (which came out last year) seem like a soap opera. While that film was filled with poorly drawn characters and too many rhetorical questions (never answered), "On the Beach" confronts the viewer with the truth that no one will truly survive a nuclear war. While not on the emotional level of "Testament", it makes its message stick with its scenes of a dying city and the last days of humanity and the only way out--those blue pills. If on the big screen, this would rate a solid R for language and some nudity.
Movie Review: One of the BEST films EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw the original version years ago and thought it was very good, THIS one however is even better! It is, quite possibly, the best film (of its kind) that I have ever seen!
The acting is superb and there is plenty of time given to really get into the lives of each character - all of which seem like people you could meet in town on any given day. Lots of tension, though there is even a moment or two of humor (far between).
Admittedly it bogs just a little toward the beginning of the third act, and it IS a sad movie that does not have a happy ending (I tear up, and I, a guy, have the emotional capacity of a brick) but it is well worth adding it to your permanent library!
Movie Review: Better Than The Original Flick Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not often a fan of remakes of any sort but I'm glad I finally overcame my bias and bought this. I read Neville Shute's novel back in eighth grade and it left a lasting impression (I'm just past 50). I enjoyed - and own - the 1959 MGM B&W version starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner and Anthony Perkins and still love it. However, this dvd (from a made-for-tv "mini" series I believe) stands out from the original in several ways, most impressively in the deeper character insights although I'll admit that the cast doesn't have the chops of the original stars. Perhaps it's the updating of these characters that got to me as the story itself remains as bleak and unsettling as it has always been.
Movie Review: Blown Away Summary: 5 Stars
I had never heard of this movie before, nor the book or older movie it was based on. I bought it off amazon because it involved a submarine and costed about $6.99. I wasn't prepared for the emtional impact it had on me. No question one of the best "independent" films i have ever seen. I was shocked at the level of quality the movie got even though it was a made for tv mini series. I Highly recomend it to everyone, but be warned this is a movie with something to say and may touch deep emotional feelings.
