Movie Reviews of Oliver!Movie Review: BEAUTIFULLY FILMED MUSICAL Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw "Oliver" when I was eight at the State Theate in Woodland, California; I just finished watching it again on DVD and I still love it! Mark Lester was an inspired choice for Oliver, and his scenes are most affecting especially with Fagan and his gang.Nancy was played by the now-forgotten Shani Wallis and she's terrifically effective in her love scenes with Bill Sikes and her singing "It's a Fine Life" is a joy to behold. Ron Moody scores strong as Fagan; he's simply marvelous. Onna White did the amazing choreography and the songs are certainly well sung. The scene where Oliver awakes in Mayfair has a special quality to it: through the window, he watches below as the street vendors sing the haunting "Who Will Buy?" Oliver Reed is fine as Bill Sikes and the Artful Dodger is memorably played by Jack Wild. It won the AA for best picture of 1968 ; it's a shame we don't see more similar films in today's cinema.
Movie Review: Consider it a wonderful experience Summary: 5 Stars
The movie musical was on its way out by the time 'Oliver!' hit theaters in 1968. Happily, this marvelously fun and entertaining film swept the Oscars and earns my vote for the best musical of the 60s (although 'The Music Man' ranks a close second). Mark Lester is adorable in the title role and Jack Wild is a kick as the mischievious Artful Dodger. Then there's Ron Moody recreating his stage role as the villainous (but still likable) Fagin. He's not exactly the same character created by Charles Dickens but he's memorable just the same. And Shani Wallis' Nancy along with Oliver Reed's Bill Sikes give the film some real dramatic punch. The production design strikingly recreates the feel and flavor of mid-19th century London. And the songs which include 'Consider Yourself' and 'Oom Pah Pah' are the icing on the cake. Do your family a great favor and add this timeless treat to your DVD collection.
Movie Review: Wonderful retelling of the Dickens classic Summary: 5 Stars
This movie definitely has a considerably happier note than the book. In the book, there were quite a few bits of nitty-gritty writing about the poverty in Industrial Revolution England and the conditions of those unfortunate enough to not have a home or three healthy, decent square meals a day just because their parents died or were unable to take care of them.
There's lots of singing, but it's a good movie. Some of the musical and dance numbers really are fun to watch, though this might not be a movie for everybody, especially those who are very strict about movies being faithful to the books. But I found this a satisfying version of the book and more appropriate for a movie format, especially with certain scenes like Oliver asking for more food and Mr. Bumble flipping his lid over this.
Movie Review: PLEASE SIR, I WANT SOME MORE !! Summary: 5 Stars
The only regret I have about this movie, is that it has an ending. It is one of the rare musicals that never palls on me, no matter how often I see it...and believe me, I have seen it many, many many times. Ron Moody & Jack Wild make for wonderfully lovable villains (though I am not sure that Dickens meant for Fagin to be at all loveable). The movie has a very un-Dickensian atmosphere of reasonable happiness, again, not completely in tune with the feel of the original book, but thankfully, the lack of the typical Dickens despair & poverty makes the movie version more watchable...particularly for kids. Mark Lester was well cast as a tender Oliver, Harry Secombe is an inspired Mr. Bumble and the supporting cast has done a marvellous job. All in all, a DVD to possess, and watch at least once a year.
Movie Review: I love this musical Summary: 5 Stars
This is definitly the best musical I have EVER seen. Sometimes you can tell with the older films that they were made a while ago, but Oliver! isn't one of them. As soon as the music starts, you are captivated and riveted to your seat. Awesome performance by Shani Wallis, Jack Wild and Ron Moody. I personally think that Oliver Reed could've done a better job. Mark Lester was a little too young to do a good acting job, but he was so cute and had the perfect look for Oliver. The choreography in this film makes me shake my head every time. Onna White really did a fantastic job on it. My favorite songs are "Consider Youself", "I'd do Anything", "Pick a Pocket", and "Oom Pah Pah". All of the songs were brilliant. The words, the music...I could go on and on all day.
