Movie Reviews of Oliver!

Movie Review: One of the last good musicals.
Summary: 5 Stars

Oliver! is a lavish color muscical version of Charles Dickens' classic novel Oliver Twist. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you'll probably recognize some of the hit songs, including "Consider Yourself," and "Where Is Love?"
If you haven't read the book either, it's about a high-spirited orphan kicked out of the orphanage in Victorian England. He escapes his new masters (undertakers!) and makes his way to London, where he's taken under the wing of Fagin (Ron Moody), a fence who employs a group of pocket-picking boys.
The film deservedly won 6 Academy Awards, incluing Best Picture. The actors are all perfect, especially Lester as Oliver and Wild as The Artful Dodger. If you're the right age, you'll remember Jack Wild from the Saturday morning show H.R. Pufnstuf. Most of the musical numbers are very entertaining, some quite spectacular, and fit in well with the story. In my own humble opinion, this is one of the last good big musical productions filmed (though I also liked 1776 very much, a few years later).

Movie Review: 'Oliver!' (Sony Pictures) Running time: 155 minutes
Summary: 5 Stars

Review number 111. I remember seeing this 1968 Christmas holiday classic in a theater the day after it came out. Story takes place around, I'll say 1850 England. When a kid sees this movie for the first time (especially back then, before cable, video games, ipods, etc), it really does make a lasting impression on you. Too many memorable scenes to mention. I thought the Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) did an exceptional good job in this film, as so did Oliver Twist (Mark Lester), Nancy-the hot redheaded bar maid (Shani Wallis), bad guy Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) and who could forget good 'ol half-hearted pick pocket master mind Fagin (Ron Moody)? Is it just me or could he have possibly modeled for Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' lp? I usually can't stand show tunes, but out of the movie's fourteen songs, I liked "Food, Glorious Food", "I'd Do Anything", "It's A Fine Life" and the swinging "Oom-Pah-Pah". Only character in 'Oliver!' I could NOT stand is that pirate reject / Napoleon wanna-be Mr. Bumble (Harry Secombe). Recommended.

Movie Review: OLIVER! - the last great film musical
Summary: 5 Stars

OLIVER! won 6 Oscars in 1968, including best picture, winning over films like THE GRADUATE. And for my money OLIVER! deserved every one. The movie is the last well crafted musical to be released and succeeds in all areas. Actually a British production with plenty of Hollywood know how behind the scenes (ie John Green, one of the great composer-condutors from Hollywood "golden Age" was on hand to supervise the music). The movie can be a bit over produced at times with some of the musical numbers going on too long, also the harsh realities of Dicken's original story tend to be watered down (purists can watch David Lean's great dramatic version). Mark Lester's performance can be irritating at times (its a female vocalist dubbing his singing voice by the way), but the other great actors never let Lester bog down the movie. Shani Wallis,Olvier Reed, Ken Moody, Jack Wild are all great. Get the Widescreen DVD if you can. Its the ony way to fully enjoy OLIVER!

Movie Review: creativity at its very best!
Summary: 5 Stars

There is something odd about the passing away of two of the main stars of this epic within months of each other, Oliver Reed and Oliver Bart. For me the music is at the core of the film and there can be no doubt that Oliver Bart was a genius at creating the kind of songs you just can't help but get hooked by. All of the performances are remarkable and are in part a great credit to Olver Reed's uncle Sir Carol Reed who directed it superbly. The essence of the film inmy mind is captured superbly by the arrival of Bill Sykes(Reed) at the local tavern late at night. His shadow in approach engulfs the mind as the music raises the odds. Reeds perforamnce (both of them) along with Ron Moody are the key reasons this film hits its mark, along with the fabulous music score... I am sure that Oliver, Carol and Oliver are having a beer in the big pub in the sky as you read this mulling over old memorys. Definately a film that I will be watching 30, 40, 50, years from now!

Movie Review: This is a classic for the family.
Summary: 5 Stars

I miss these kinds of films. They are classics for the whole family. I put together a list to remind folks of some of the best ones out there that are family oriented interesting and full of great music. It blows me away when I meet a 10 year old who hasn't seen something like Sound of Music or Wizard of Oz. It's been a long time since Hollywood has come up with one of these!

Mary Poppins
Sound of Music
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
My Fair Lady
Wizard of OZ
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Annie
Oliver

I am an advocate of good old fasion family fun. I try and take my kids to these and other live musicals as well. We even do voice lesson Cds: (I recommend them as well)
"Voice Lessons To Go" by Vaccarino, to prep before we sing through their sound tracks. It's just another alternative to regular television time. There is a wholesome quality to them that sadly is not very prevelent today.
