Movie Reviews of Oh, God!Movie Review: The Legendary George Burns In His Most "Heavenly", Role Summary: 5 Stars
If ever a movie could be termed "charming", then Carl Reiner's delightful little comedy "Oh God!" starring George Burns and John Denver would most definately be it. This film had such an original premise to it at the time of its release and after viewing this film again last week I can say its main strength still rests in the brilliant casting of George Burns as "the guy upstairs", if you know who I mean! This low key and charming story is a real favourite of mine and each screening I have of it reaffirms my strong belief that actors dont have to be twenty two, tanned, buffed, and beautiful to be interesting on screen. "Oh God!" is that real rarity nowadays of a film that is equally touching, warm and thought provoking all the while carrying a positive message that isn't rammed down our throats. Prior to this film's release I'm sure George Burns would never have come to anyone's mind if they had been asked to describe what they thought God was "supposed", to look like. Depicted in the movie as an eighty something little guy with glasses, wearing a baseball cap, and with a dry ready wit it somehow totally works and seems perfectly natural. Ever since my first viewing of "Oh God!" many years ago whenever my thoughts turn to the "guy upstairs", in an instant an image of George Burns in his basball cap and plaid work shirt shuffling along the street springs automatically to mind. As has been written there's alot to be said for the power of film!
Movie Review: George Burns' higher calling Summary: 5 Stars
Looking at this film today, "Oh God" seems pretty dated in appearance, but its messages are universal. George Burns continues his motion picture comeback with this whimsical comedy that has much to say about life in general: religion, the problems in the world, and just plain believing.
John Denver takes a shot at acting as the film's honest, decent everyman who is chosen by the Almighty to be the next messenger. While Denver handles his role competently & sympathetically--and has pleasing chemistry with Burns--this film is clearly Burns' show all the way. And who could argue? He has the ultimate role here! It's a perfect vehicle for Burns as his comical stage patter reflects on all kinds of creations: people, animals, food, clothes, etc. Although his trademark cigar is nowhere to be seen, you can practically envision Burns thoughtfully puffing on it between jokes.
Included is fine support from Teri Garr, a "pre-M*A*S*H" David Ogden Stiers, Barnard Hughes, Ralph Bellamy and especially Paul Sorvino going over the top as a husky, boisterous, leisure suit-wearing evangelist who has "spoken with God personally".
The courtroom finale in which God comes to the rescue as a "surprise witness" is fine, but gets slighty marred in some cheap, showy effects.
Otherwise, this is a timely film that modestly sends a clear message: Have faith, and don't hurt one another.
Movie Review: George Burns plays God Summary: 5 Stars
John Denver finds hemself to be a messenger of God, regardless if he wants to be or not. As you would expect everyone thinks he`s
a nut, even his wife. After all, there are always plenty of kooks running around claiming to be a messenger of God, why would
anyone believe him?
But in this case, he is the real deal. And there are plenty of laughs along the way as he tries to spread the word.
George Burns plays God. Burns was a master of wit and humor. Not many people could get away with playing the role of God, let
alone doing it as comedy. But he pulls it off brilliantly.
And if Burn`s characterization of God is accurate or not, who knows. But it`s probably pretty safe to say that if it isn`t, his
portrayal of God is what we would all like to believe God would be like.
Movie Review: Classic 70's cinema -- weak DVD features Summary: 5 Stars
If you're reading this, you've probably already seen it and know it's a great movie. The DVD features are minimal (trailers, a list of awards, and George Burns' movies). Some deleted scenes or outtakes would have been really interesting, but there are none offered. The commentary track reveals a few interesting things about the movie, but also rambles about non-related things. They admitted they hadn't seen the movie in a long time, so their commentary could have been better had they prepared. Another weird problem: the music on the main menu is so distorted it sounds like it's being played through a cheap hand radio. But the sound on the movie is good. If I could rate the DVD features separately, I would give them two stars.
Movie Review: It can work... Summary: 5 Stars
For my wife it was Stigmata. For me, it was a slightly older movie with a slightly different message. It's up to us. Religion is false.
There's a part of my beliefs that that says that the master truth is spread throughout all the religions of the world. I think it comes from a line where God names all the religious heads as his sons. I still believe it.
I don't know when I watched this movie, seeing as it was made a year before I was even born. It is a good movie as I still remember lines from it. I just watched it again today. I still love it. You should see it if you ever get the chance.
