Movie Reviews of Off the Map

Movie Review: I'm Becoming a Joan Allen Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

After watching this film, I gained a real appreciation of the true acting talents of Joan Allen. In "The Upside of Anger" I was not convinced yet. It took this picture to be convinced she is in the big leagues of acting. Along with tested film veteran Sam Elliot, she gives a very powerful performance. The film looks at depression and the meaning of life. It seems to me that this movie's main theme is the existential drive towards artistic meaning, finding your own canvas to paint, etc. The characters seem so desperate to work themselves out of the situations they are in, and they all do it by creatively looking at their own lives.

Movie Review: Brilliantly Wonderful for the Heart!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Depression hits and it is such huge work trying to turn it all around and along comes this magic gift...WOW!

I found "Off The Map" so heart warmingly brilliant that I sat and watched it over again. I wanted to stay within the "given" within it all for-ever. I have never felt so loved and supported by a movie before.

To the Cast...THANK YOU!
To the ScreenPlay Writer ... Thank You!
To the Producer...Thank You!
To the Director ...Thank You!

I would love more wonderful gifts of this magnificence to made for the viewing, it is such a magically healing movie!

Movie Review: ENCHANTED
Summary: 5 Stars

I HAVE VISITED NEW MEXICO SEVERAL TIMES AND AM PLANNING TO MOVE THERE. THE STATE IS KNOWN AS THE "LAND OF ENCHANTMENT" AND THE MOVIE DEMONSTRATES WHY. IT TOOK A FEW DAYS FOR ME TO FIGURE OUT THE MEANING, WHICH IN ITSELF MAKES THE MOVIE GREAT, BUT ONCE I DID I KEPT FINDING MEANING. IT IS HARD TO EXPLAIN. SOMETHING ABOUT HAVING THE TYPE OF LIFE THAT WE ALL WISH WE COULD HAVE; SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL, QUIET COMPANIONSHIP WITH TRUE, UNRUSHED CONVERSATION, NO CELL PHONES, ETC. AND THE IRONY OF SOMEONE DESPARATE TO LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND IN SEARCH FOR SOMETHING BETTER. LATER, THAT PERSON COMES BACK. I THINK WE ALL CAN RELATE TO JO.

Movie Review: Quiet masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film in the Chicago International Film Festival of 2003, and since then I've wondered at its slow release and almost total lack of promotion. I think its theatrical release lasted a full week in Chicago, apparently with no advertising. Yet "Off the Map" remains one of my favorite movies of recent years, a quiet stage adaptation with pitch-perfect acting, deft handling of different tones, lasting characterizations, and a spectacular setting. This film deserves far more attention than it received, and I hope the DVD release will enable its discovery by a new group of viewers.

Movie Review: My favorite movie of all time
Summary: 5 Stars

This touching film, Off The Map, tugs at the heart-strings as a young girl, Bo, watches her father go through a crippling depression. The sharp dialogue and many-layered characters are a treat for the mind, and the beautiful landscape and intriguing themes include the viewer in the emotional rollercoaster that this movie tumbles through. Although slow-paced, new concepts are introduced periodically. Meanwhile, an ongoing discussion related to the depression of Charley and George, peppers the plot. This movie feeds the viewer an emotional buffet, and leaves one feeling perfectly satisfied.
