Movie Reviews of Off the MapMovie Review: New Mexico is a very powerful place Summary: 5 Stars
It's a bit hard to be objective about this film, as my wife and I saw it in Santa Fe on vacation on an evening when we were in the perfect mood for a good film. We had no idea what this movie was about, only that it had two of our favorite actors, Sam Elliot and Joan Allen in it and that it was made in New Mexico. In a nutshell, I found the actors to be so at ease and the story so human that ever so slowly I was drawn in to what proved to be a beautiful tale, at once sublety powerful and whimsical. Valentina de Angelis, as the daughter of the principles, is extraordinary (although she does stay close to precociousness now and then) in her role. I'll not relate any of the plot here, just encourage you to see this film as soon as you can. It will remind you that the drivel that pours out of Hollywood may catch your attention, but films like this stay with you.
Movie Review: Great for NM lovers, artists, and folks longing to see a movie with no enemies Summary: 5 Stars
A beautiful movie set in northern New Mexico in a simple time. A family lives in the NM high desert rural land reminiscent of "the 60s" style living. The story is occasionally narrated through the eyes of the daughter, now adult. The acting is superb. It is movie that deals with depression, eocnomic hardship, challenge, and family issues without judgment, blame, or violence. An outsider joins the family and becomes involved in their lives in an integral way. It is refreshing to see a movie where there are no bad guys. Off the Map offers a transformative theme and is a wonder to see. The natural beauty adds to its depth. It is hard to imagine coming away from this movie without feeling sad yet edified about life. I heartily thank my friend and author M. Quest who recommended this to me!
Movie Review: Movie filled with deep meaning Summary: 5 Stars
My husband gave me the best compliment while watching this movie. That 'I would have as much patience with him that the wife in this film has with her struggling husband'. Elliot's character is suffering from depression. His young daughter seems to be in her own little world, though not totally unaffected by her father's illness. I was touched with the beauty, patience and simplicity of the characters and their love for their surroundings. I think the young man sent by the IRS captured it completely when he tells the father that he's truly 'his own man'. Elliot's character owes nothing, lives off the land, has no phone, etc. However, there are still troubles and no one can escape tragedy if it chooses to come to your doorstep. Wonderful movie!

Movie Review: If you're looking for a Sweet and Offbeat film. Summary: 5 Stars
What great characters! The Mom (Joan Allen) is holding it together, while trying not to lose herself and alternative values. The daughter (Valentina de Angelis) is innovative and full of spirit. I always think of Sam Elliot (the Dad) as strong and in control, however, he is quite believable and entertaining as a man consumed with depression and despair. When the torment of the conventional world comes knocking at the door in the form of an IRS man (Jim True-Frost) the reaction of the family is as unconventional as the rest of there lives.
It made me think about some of the people that have come and gone from my life and it made me crave big glasses of cold water ~ it's the simple things.
Movie Review: A surprise and a Gem Summary: 5 Stars
My wife picked this one out very impulsively. Neither of us had heard of it, but she thought it looked good. She was right.
In fact, if I had read reviews or even the back of the box beforehand, I'd have probably liked it somewhat less, as the film's charm lies largely in the sheer unpredictability of not only the story, but also the dialog and character development. So really, you should probably stop reading now.
That said, however, the artistry of this little treasure would probably transcend even the misfortune of having read some spoilers. It's a very subtle and quiet piece, but so rich and wonderful that it'll certainly have quite an impact on most viewers.
