Movie Reviews of Ocean's Twelve

Movie Review: The club just got bigger
Summary: 4 Stars

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are back in business, and this time their taking the whole family with them. Julia Roberts Catherine Zeta-Jones, and even a brief glimpse of Bruce Willis all manage to snag a small bit of glory.

Although Bernie Mac and the rest seem to diminish in role size, Matt Damon was given a bigger part, almost seeming to kick CLooney from top dog down to club manager. However, Damon was able to pull it off without seeming to presuptious with his new found fame.
Clooney and Pitt also seem to have the jovial spirit going, and quite a few scenes with them together are bent on just reviving the old Ocean's eleven feel of comraderie. Such as when Clooney asks if anyone can guess how old he is, and when told he looks fifty, goes off in a huff and consiquently must pester everyone around to see if he really does look that old.

Catherine Zeta-Jones gets rather old and stale quickly though. Its irritating how she always seems one step ahead of Danny, and even though she hasn't known the group long. She manages to second guess them the whole way. Its almost irrationally improbable the way she plays into their plans, but it works out rather well in the end. An end that twists so many different ways, its rather hard to remember who's conning who.

A good sequel all the way around, mind-boggling and slightly predictable in spots, but good nevertheless. One can only wonder if Soderberg will try thirteen, but that might be pushing it.

Movie Review: Funky Music, Rusty falls in love, beautiful Lahiri + Europe
Summary: 4 Stars

What else do you want (it's just a movie, at the end of the days)?
I think this is a more female oriented/pleasing sequel. We don't always need cunning story plot of people stealing things, do we (unless you are watching it to be a MASTER THIEF)?

SO 12 is not 11, but it DOESN'T HAVE TO BE.
Why? What is more important is scoring in the Entertaining domain. And I think it's Entertaining.
It's a good movie if it is good on it's own, no matter HOW IT ACHIEVE it's entertaining value, I don't care about consistency with the prior movies (including the Rat Pack version), OKAY?

GREAT funky Music by David Holmes! It's even better than 11. Congrats!

Brad Pitt looks very goregous and stylish in everything he do in the movie. For this fact, 12 is worthwhile to be made.
Catherine Zeta Jones is dazzling, too! She is such a rare movie star that blend tremendous beauty with tremendous brains, what a talent!!!
And how can you give a movie a poor rep if it makes even the "antogonist" so LOVABLE! I love the character of NightFox, he is totally awesome, especially in his, of course, Laser Hall Scene. But frankly, he live by his words (190 millions) that shows how remarkable a GENTLEMAN that he is!

On the whole, love to see Ocean's 13, 14.......coming along creating more ENTERTAINMENT for the female audience.

Movie Review: Not as Smooth as Eleven but a Very Good Film in It's Own Right
Summary: 4 Stars

Ocean's Eleven set a very high standard, one of its strengths was that all the characters got their moments to shine. In Twelve, unfortunately, most of the cast is absent for most of the film. Saying that, this film was great because these characters looked human and vulnerable. I mean they full off this spectacular heist in the first movie and in this movie they are trying to stay alive by making another amazing score, but, there is the ever present danger of Andy Garcia's character threatening to kill each of them.
This film had very large shoes to fill. It's the same with every sequel that follows an amazing first movie. Some folks have been very harsh with their comments of this movie. I say the same thing every time I view a movie. You have to keep an open mind and try not to compare the sequels with the first movie. On its own this movie has lots of charm, its filmed in Europe in three of the most exciting cities on the continent. Its kinda sad because they seem to bungle everything (have you seen anything so sad as those guys being arrested and hauled off to jail?) before it comes together. Yes it has a lot of star power, but no not everyone is enamored with the faces of "A" list celebrities. Sometimes we are enamored with their acting ability. Oh, yes. Soderburg gets 5 stars for direction.

Movie Review: Terrific holiday escape movie!
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is a bull's-eye at the heart of its target audience. Be serious with yourself: you aren't going to see this for anything other than escaping regular life and the holiday hassle. This is mainstream Hollywood entertainment, not an indepent, experimental film. Do you like George Cloony? Think Brad Pitt is cool? Enjoy caper movies in exotic locations? Then this is your movie!

This struck me as similar to the recent remake of "The Italian Job" or even the first "Mission Impossible" in that the plot is complicated and convoluted, but where those were trying to be fairly serious thriller/dramas, Ocean's 12 is all about coolness and fun. The crew looks good, they have unlimited ideas and funds and all the right contacts. They never stay in Motel 6's, that's for sure. Yes, the plot is a little confusing but let that go and just watch. It unfolds and circles back and eventually resolves itself, sort of. There may be plot holes, but c'mon, this is entertainment.

There are also some fun film tricks like freeze frames, interesting point of view shots, slow-mo zooms and so on. Catherine Z is great and looks better. The new villain is pretty cool. This will make a ton of dough.

All in all, crime pays and man, is it fun!

Movie Review: Stylish caper film - keeps things moving with fun and humor
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a fun caper film. The movie works because of the way it uses the cast with attitude, style, and a lot of wisecracking humor. Since there are so many in the cast, it is a real feat to make them all memorable, give them a reasonable amount of screen time and make sure that everyone has some good lines.

The trick in this kind of movie is to keep it similar enough to the first movie to keep the audience of the first one signing on to the new film, but different enough to not bore them. Ocean's 12 has enough twists and turns to make it fun and enough self-knowledge to add some spice. For example, a delicious part of the movie is using the similarity in appearance between Tess Ocean (played by Julia Roberts) and Julia Roberts to some effect in the film, even though her ears and nose and accent make it obvious she is NOT Julia Roberts.

This is not a great film, not even a great caper film. But it is stylish, quick moving, doesn't resort to raunch, and gives its big cast some individual moments to act. Carl Riener's scene sitting in front of the TV when his wife asks him what's wrong comes to mind immediately. Watch his face during that scene. Good work.

Enjoy!
