Movie Reviews of Objective Burma

Movie Review: Errol Flynn at his best
Summary: 4 Stars

Sure, as other reviewers have pointed out, this isn't a true story, and it doen't claim to be; as clearly stated by the producers at the start. It does depict, however, the very difficult terrain in which one had to fight any enemy in pure rain forest jungle, especially if it's in their backyard; visabilty - very limited; progress - very slow and laboured; disorientation; waterborn diseases; insects; difficulty of receiving essential supplies etc., etc.
There's a lot to like; the Franz Waxman score from the credits onwards gives just the "right feel", Raoul Walsh's direction provides just the right amount of emotion, sentiment and action that is appropiate for each and every scene; and he most certainly exploted the acting talents of Errol Flynn to draw out Errol's best for whatever part he was playing under Walsh's direction. (It is a great pity that Errol Flynn was very much under rated as an actor, in my opinion, and as a result he didn't get sufficient roles in which he was able to demostrate his abilities; he was essentially type cast as an action hero, romantic lead that looked good if nothing else and nothing could have been further from the truth).
The movie grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let up until the end; sure it is long at almost 2 1/2 hours, but not unnecessarily so. It is pure entertainment that was made at the end of WW2; so don't think too much about it, just enjoy.
I wonder how long we will have to wait for another actioner WW2 film to come to DVD, Desperate Journey with Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Nancy Coleman, Raymond Massey and Arthur Kennedy; also directed by Raoul Walsh and with this cast you know its great entertainment!

Movie Review: GOOD but is it historically correct?
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a well-made film and even better now that it is on DVD. Watching airborne paratroopers jump into a jungle atmosphere was interesting especially since they were able to find a huge clearing to touch ground in with no one getting hung up in jungle canopy. The film showed an almost unrealistic battle as the American soldiers attacked a radar site. While it may have actually happened-that part for me was hard to swallow. The first supply drop into a clearing was suspenseful as I thought the enemy would be there to ambush the men when they went after their supplies and amazed that the soldiers didn't seem to look around for the enemy. I found the disintegration of the men's uniforms interesting. I got the impression the men were in the jungle about four days but the uniforms at the end of the movie appeared as though they had been worn at least six months but perhaps clothing does fall apart that quickly in the jungle. The gliders that flew in with equipment and men were an interesting aspect of the film. The acting was very good especially the night they spent on a mountaintop waiting to be attacked. This was a side of the China-Burma-India war segment that most people have no idea about. I'm glad there is a film, which shows some of that whether it is historically correct or not.

Movie Review: A Must See for Any War Movie Buff
Summary: 4 Stars

"Objective Burma" is a no-nonsense war drama that I enjoyed because of its solid cast, well-developed "ordinary men" characters and realistic, if sometimes brutal, portrayal of the casualties of war. I could feel the men's frustration and desperation as they felt (and were) abandoned for some time in enemy territory and suffered privation, enemy ambushes, oppressive heat and rough and unknown terrain. Errol Flynn led a competent cast. His Captain Nelson had depth, intelligence, grit and compassion. It was not his usual swashbuckler, romantic rogue role and I am glad Warner Brothers took a chance on his playing this part. He sets the pace for the movie and is clearly comfortable in his own skin in the role of Captain Nelson. While the narration at the beginning and some of the scenes with the Japanese troops may be dated and carry propaganda of the day, they do not detract from the film's being a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable war movie and a must for any war movie buff.

Movie Review: Take your salt tablet and quit whining
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great restoration of the original movie and two shorts. Any fan of Errol Flynn or WWII movies will enjoy it. This is one of the best jungle war movies you will ever see. The sound effects and sets they used to give the feel of the jungle are great. Even if it is black & white you will feel like you are there. The action is good paced with a group of paratroopers going from a quick in and out destroy a radio station mission to a drawn out survival mission walking back to friendly territory. The DVD includes a short movie on Tailgunners with Burgess Meredith and Ronald Reagan and another about Tanks with Paul Tobias. These were used as propaganda films during the war and are actually fun to watch. The one on tanks is in color. This is well worth adding to any movie collection. I'm sure most fathers would love to get it as a gift.

Movie Review: A pleasant surprise
Summary: 4 Stars

I had always heard about Objective Burma, but had never been able to find it. It was finally aired on TV and I got to see it. The film features Errol Flynn, in one of his most impressive acting turns, stars as Captain Nelson, a paratrooper commander who leads his men into a mission that was supposed to last under a day. Instead, they are cut off and are forced to wait it out behind enemy lines, experiencing absolute hell.

The movie was a pleasant surprise, as I didn't know how Flynn would play out in a WWII film. But Flynn was excellent as is the movie itself.
