Movie Reviews of Objective Burma

Movie Review: "Objective Burma (1945) ... Errol Flynn ... Raoul Walsh (Director) (2003)"
Summary: 5 Stars

Warner Bros. Pictures presents "OBJECTIVE BURMA" (1945) (142 min/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) -- Starring Errol Flynn, William Prince, James Brown, George Tobias & Henry Huff.

Directed by Raoul Walsh.

A group of men parachute into Japanese-occupied Burma with a dangerous and important mission: to locate and blow up a radar station. They accomplish this well enough, but when they try to rendezvous at an old air-strip to be taken back to their base, they find Japanese waiting for them, and they must make a long, difficult walk back through enemy-occupied jungle.

Raoul Walsh, excellent for directing action, does a good job on this picture. A rare film in that Flynn has no women to romance - the entire cast is male. While they talk about women, there are none to be found. There are plenty of outdoor sequences and fair amount of action. Top of the line war film shot in beautiful black and white.

A must see for fans of WWII films, or of Errol Flynn fans who want to see him in one of his best roles.

Movie Review: Action-filled, exciting war adventure
Summary: 5 Stars

Objective, Burma! is a great WWII adventure about a behind-the-lines mission involving fifty paratroopers. The story follows Captain Charles Nelson and fifty paratroopers who are dropped behing enemy lines in Burma so that they may blow up a radar station. They run into numerous problems and have to fight their way out of the Burmese jungle. There is action at every turn with the tense conclusion a perfect ending. Fans of Errol Flynn will love this one as well. As the movie moves along, the viewer begins to feel the same feelings the soldiers stuck in the jungle do. The whole movie seems very realistic because of the setting in the jungle, actually filmed in California.

What is there to say about Errol Flynn? He gives another great performance as Captain Nelson, the heroic leader of the paratroopers. Henry Hill is also very good as an aging war correspondent who accompanies the men on their mission. Also joining them are James Brown, William Prince, George Tobias, and Stephen Richards. This is a great World War II adventure that will keep all viewers interested. The final battle is great with plenty of anxiety in the air. Excellent action, great story, interesting character, how can you lose? Check out this Errol Flynn classic!

Movie Review: Surprisingly Engaging!!
Summary: 5 Stars

To be honest, I was not expecting much from this 1945 film.

While I like Errol Flynn, I thought this might be a mismatch of his typical persona with the theme of this film. He's just too slick for a war drama I thought. This is for more of a John Wayne type it seemed.

But Flynn pulls it off with aplomb, and his usual suavity couples nicely with his role as mission leader Captain Nelson. But it is clear near the film of the film even his confident character is having self doubts.

Despite lack of any special effects and being entirely in black and white, the film is able to maintain a remarkable ongoing level of suspense. Like the solidiers you just don't know who or what is going to pop out of the jungle or go bump in the night.

The characters under his command group are also surprisingly well developed and the viewer develops empathy for their suffering. You will almost feel the jungle heat and humidity.

It's not a slam-dunk that his mission will be victorious despite a great start and you will be kept guessing up to the end.

Highly recommended for World War II or Errol Flynn fans.

Movie Review: One of Errol Flynn's best roles
Summary: 5 Stars

I know there has been a lot of criticism of this movie because of it's historical inaccuracies. Keep in mind it was made in Hollywood, which means it's entertainment with an actual non fictional story mixed in. If you want historical accuracy, watch the History Channel.
In this film, Flynn shows a wide range of his ability that which he was unfairly never fully respected for. There is a few scenes in it which Flynn shows his sense of humor. For example, when talking to a frightened paratrooper paralyzed by fear on his first jumping mission Flynn asks, "would you like a nice shot of bourbon?" The frigtened GI replies, "YES!" FLynn responds, "So would I". It's a good scene where you see that part of Flynn that always had that glint in his eye and just makes you(me) love him all the more. Also very serious drama in the scene where they discover the torture camps of his friend. Don't miss this one.

Movie Review: Objective Burma
Summary: 5 Stars

A Great transfer to DVD for a great movie. Although not the best history lesson considering Burma was a major British theater of operations and not American, the movie still provides an excellent story about the many obstacles "the fog of war" throws in the way of a group of paratroopers lead by Errol Flynn. The DVD picture is crystal clear and the sound transfer is good. Flynn's acting in this film is surpassed only by The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Sea Hawk.

It is well past time for Flynn's great films to be released: The Adventures of Robin Hood (September 30, 2003 FINALLY), The Sea Hawk, Gentleman Jim, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and Captain Blood!!! It has been a real travesty keeping fine Flynn vehicles like these films unavailable on DVD.
