Movie Review: This is not a film for everyone
Summary: 5 Stars
I hate to exclude anyone, but I don't know if someone who's not Dominican; closely related to a Dominican; or, at least an inmigrant from a similar country can understand, relate, and appreciate this film. It's a movie that depicts an experience that, although very personal, is one that's been lived and shared by millions who've gone thru it with almost no deviation from what is shown on the film.
So, when I watch this movie I'm not looking primarily for cinematographic quality (although, as Dominican movies go, this one is pretty good). Instead, I'm looking for something that faithfully represents what I went thru, what my parents went thru, and what countless others have gone thru... the struggle to survive in a developing country; the pursuit of the "Dominican" dream (moving to "Nueba Yol"... a.k.a. New York); the culture shock; the dissapointment of realizing that NY and Nueba Yol are two different places; etc., etc., etc.
That's why I believe it'd be hard for someone who's looking at this from the perspective of someone who's grown up in the States to get the full benefit of this film. However, if you're open-minded and truly care to learn about the Dominican experience, this is the film to watch. Just don't expect anything close to a Hollywood production, because it is not. It's a film you watch with the heart, rather than the eyes. It might be helpful if you call your Dominican neighbor and invite him/her over to watch it along with you and provide some guidance :)
