Movie Reviews of Now and ThenMovie Review: "Early days of Christina Ricci & Thora Birch" Summary: 5 Stars
"Now and Then" is a very great depiction of growing up.. And it features the early days of 2 of now our greatest and most sexiest actresses Thora Birch (here she is a blonde) and my favorite Christina Ricci..They shine as does the other 2 girls in this more then wonderful movie..The movie features a fantastic 1970s Classic Rock soundtrack..It covers all areas of what 70s Classic Rock was..Pick up the cd soundtrack while you are at it along with this dvd..The only downside on this dvd is there is SADLY No Behind The Scenes..I wish they would have behind the scenes and bloopers of this movie would have been great.. And even better would be a reunion of the cast..Coz i am wondering what ever became of the other 2 actresses in this movie with Ricci & Birch..And this too i think they could have casted the "older" versions of the girls better then they did..Rosie O Donnell as the older Christina Ricci in Rosie's dreams..The only one of the "older" versions that is really believable that can really picture is Melanie Griffith as the "older" Thora Birth..But they are not in this movie long thankfully..They are only in start and end with maybe a total time of 5 minutes or a tad more..Not enough to ruin this great movie..The movie focuses thankfully more on Ricci / Birch and the girls..Other then what i just mentioned this is one of the greatest films you will ever see..And if you had been between ages 5 and teen years in the 1970s it will bring back loads of memories..Everything from the opening scene of the girls playing "red rover red rover let (put your name here) come over" to the music to the looks and just things did as a kid and teen in those days..It is reinacted sooooo well that you can't even tell this is a 1995 movie..The sets the feeling is total 70s..It is recreated magnificentally..I am 38 this year *2004* and it brought back many memories for me..Christina Ricci here reminds me sooooo much of My Beloved Mandy when we first met right down to a priceless basketball scene..So this movie has sentimental value to me..Watch this movie maybe it will touch you in that way too..But either way i can guarentee that it will bring back memories..It will be a fun filled viewing exsperiance..A kind of a early teen girl version of Stand By Me..Enjoyable Fun and Wonderful filmed movie adds up fun for all no matter when your generation is.NOT TO BE MISSED Gets better with every single time you watch it..A must for any fan of the one and only Christina Ricci..If you are a fan of Christina Ricci and you don't have this movie get this movie to prove you are her fan..Christina Ricci Rules......
Movie Review: As I Came of Age, So Did They Summary: 5 Stars
I'll admit, I'm biased in favor of this movie because I loved it as a kid, but it still warrants at least 4 stars in my book.
Now and Then is the story of four best friends, told in flashback during a weekend get-together to reunite the girls after 15+ years of not seeing each other. The girls are Chrissy (Ashleigh Aston Moore, Rita Wilson), Roberta (Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell), Samantha (Gaby Hoffman, Demi Moore), and Teeny (Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith). They reminisce about one summer in particular that marked the beginning of their growing up.
Roberta found out the details of her mother's tragic death, Samantha's parents split up, Teeny spends the summer wishing to grow boobs, and Chrissy tags along for the ride. It all culminates in a seance they have in a graveyard to call back the spirit of a boy who died very young.
The beauty of this movie is its carefree mood that really captures the innocence of childhood and the blind friendships that children have with each other. It is also filled with memorable scenes and character actors.
I can't tell you how many times my friends and I would re-enact this movie or adopt one of the characters as our own. It has a special place in my heart and is a great coming-of-age story for girls.
Movie Review: Kathryn's Now and Then Review Summary: 5 Stars
The movie "Now & then" is about a group of 4 girls who grew up together in the city of Shelby, Indiana. Their names are Roberta, Chrissy, Sam, and Teeny. They had a goal one summer to resurrect "Dear johnny", they actually belive that they succeeded in accoplishing that goal. They also save up money to get a treehouse. they live in a neighborhood called the "Gaslight addition". It is a neighborhood that has been around for a while. Sam's parents get a divorce but does not tell them until they are adults. They find out that a man called "crazy pete" is in fact "dear johnny's" father. they even find out that dear johnny and his mother were murdered while pete was at a bar. they tried going to a psyhcic and try to find out how they died but it does not work. i think that this movie is a good teen movie or preteen movie that shows that 4 friends can make a pact to come back to shelby when one girl needs the others . i would recommend this movie to any teen girl or boy who likes movies about teens and when they grow up.
Movie Review: Stand By Me for girls Summary: 5 Stars
Has anyone else noticed that all good coming-of-age films take place in the era of the Vietnam War? The turbulent times make for good cinema, even if the movie never deals directly with the war. In fact, the only reference to 'Nam in this film is a brief cameo by Brendan Fraser, as a disillusioned soldier.
This film is full of clever, meaningful quotes. They often seem cheesy, but when taken into actual considerations, the messages in this film are truly inspiring.
In the suburbs of thew early 1970's, four girls live and breath for eachother. There is the sensitive and curious Samantha (Gaby Hoffman), and her precocious best friend Teeny (Thora Birch), who is in a hurry to grow up. Their unlikely companions are the tough tomboy Roberta (Christina Ricci), and the innocent but insecure Chrissy (Ashleigh Aston Moore). After a seance in the cemetary, they embark on the adventure that will inevitably claim the end of their childhood.
All four of the girls give decent performances. The script is witty, and the soundtrack is wonderful. It's sentimental candy, that will most be enjoyed by women.
Movie Review: Perfection Summary: 5 Stars
Now and Then is the perfect girl movie if you have all of your best girlfriends over at your house and you want to have a great time just pop in Now and Then and everyone there will be so happy for the entire night because this is story of everything you have dreamed of from what life will be like once you and your friends have all moved out and gotten jobs than all the fun adventures you have as children from riding your bikes to the next town to thinking that you have made a ghost rise from the dead it is a fun touching coming of age story that speaks to the young and old and forces you to call all of your old friends and see what they are up to and remind them of all the things that you did as children. I would recommend this movie to everyone mainly females though because they can relate to more. I hope that everyone enjoys this movie as much as I did!
