Movie Reviews of Now, Voyager (Keepcase)

Movie Review: Excellent Davis but nothing package
Summary: 3 Stars

It is surprising that this famous film, one of the best in the legacy of the great Bette Davis, has been issued on DVD in such a basic package. All the superlatives apply to Davis as the repressed Boston spinster, Paul Henried as her lover, Gladys Cooper as her autocratic mother and Claude Rains as her psychiatrist. The film is a superb Warner's production. Davis was vigilant on the set, directing the traffic with director Irving Rapper and ensuring that it was quality all the way. A minor criticism is that the transitions are often clumsy and sudden, causing a jarring shift in moods.

While the print of the film presented here is perfect, it is disappointing that the only extra is the original trailer. Surely an expert commentary was warranted, particularly when they were made available on many lesser Davis vehicles. At least the DVD can be purchased sometimes at a bargain price.

Movie Review: missing scenes
Summary: 3 Stars

I recently acqired the DVD presentation of Now Voyager. Am I the only one to notice that a key scene has been left out? I believe there was a montage sequence showing the the physical change in Charlotte......makeup, diet, exercise, etc. This scene is not in my print. (There is a still of this transformation in Gene Ringgold's book, "The Films of Bette Davis".) Also left out of my print is the scene where Ilka Chase, as Davis' sophisticated sister-in-law, offers to loan Davis a wardrobe to wear on the cruise, and to mark the garments with notes so Charlotte will know which accessories to wear with each dress. This renders a later scene meaningless. Warner's were lax and have spoiled a classic for me.

Movie Review: Very Boring!
Summary: 3 Stars

ok honestly,i found this film too be slow and boring, but i will say its Bette Davis at her most beuatifal(after the transformation of course)
i find some of her typical early/mid 40's dramas to be slow.
Some good ones are "Mr.Skeffington" "the man who came to dinner"(still slow though) and "Old aquantiance",this films isnt her best in my opinion her better films are "All about eve" "Dead Ringer" "Dark Victory" and "The Catered affair"
