Movie Reviews of Now, Voyager (Keepcase)

Movie Review: One woman's voyage from shadows into the light
Summary: 4 Stars

Like another classic Bette Davis drama, "Dark Victory", 1942's "Now, Voyager" tugs at the heartstrings not only because of its sad, bittersweet elements, but also due to its frequent scenes of characters reaching out to one another to provide help and solace. Like that other film, this one makes one feel that's there's hope for the human race, showing we're capable of true other-centeredness when we put our minds (and hearts) to it. Of course, Gladys Cooper's monstrous portayal of Bette Davis' mother also shows the other ways humans are capable of behaving.

This Warner Home Video DVD of "Now, Voyager" doesn't include a lot of extra features (though there are generous audio samplings of the film's scoring sessions), but the print and sound are sharp and clean.

If you're interested in discovering the old classics of Hollywood, or especially the old classics featuring famed actress Bette Davis, this is definitely one of the essentials. Don't miss it.

Movie Review: What could be better...
Summary: 4 Stars

...than Bette Davis chain smoking her way through life, and still looking glamorous?
...than her mother telling the psychologist that her daughter is no sicker than, "a moulting canary?
...than Claude Rains as the owl-eyed psychologist saying, "A mother's rights - twaddle?"

This is an epic picture, completely unbelievable (let's flash back to when she was 16 and in braids!) and completely Warner Brothers (the stock footage of South America...) Ridiculous coincidences, patronizing attitudes to "Latin types," and Paul Henried playing an American named Jerry.

But it's hypnotic, and not only a must-see, but a must-own. Line after line of elegant dialogue, and Mary Wickes as Dora the nurse!

The only thing I can't stand is the ghastly child actress - we can only hope she and her party dress were torn apart by wolves right after the last scene...

Movie Review: NOW a Davis Fan
Summary: 4 Stars

I was never a Bette Davis fan. Seemed that any of her movies I tended catch on TV, or would see clips from in various biographical presentations, highlighted her many less-than-pleasant characters.

Finally made myself watch Now, Voyager and enjoyed it tremendously.

The story seemed to be a little muddled in parts - perhaps suffering from the book to film transition, but not distracting enough to make much difference.

If you've left Bette alone because of her, "edgier" roles (to put it politely), don't be afraid of this movie. You won't be disappointed.

Movie Review: Repressed victorian woman self-actualizes with help from empathic psychiatrist
Summary: 4 Stars

By today's standard, Betty goes a bit over the top, but it is nevertheless, a good, albeit compressed version of changes of internalized self-objects. The still camera angles are certainly standard for this period piece, but the composition and costuming are superb. Davis is excellent and one can see her potential as she progresses into a movie icon. This should be in your library.

Movie Review: Bette, Bette, Bette
Summary: 4 Stars

If you like Bette Davis and you have never seen this movie -- you must! And, the Paul Henreid ad lib lighting of two smokes at the same time is a classic!
