Movie Reviews of Now, Voyager (Keepcase)

Movie Review: Charlotte Vale's (Bette Davis) coming out party
Summary: 5 Stars

Over all this reminded me of a one liner in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" (1966) where Hero says," For us there will never be happiness." Philia replies," We must learn to be happy without it."

This is not as dark as "Dark Victory" (1939). But it is just as intense. And there is no way that you will get me to mention ""Don't ask for the moon--we have the stars" in this review. What makes the movie so intriguing is that you can recognize the characters in real life. I think one of the shockers for me was when Charlotte Vale was forced to remove her eye glasses to find she did not need them. I tried it my self and could not see a thing. Of course by this time most viewers have their glasses off by this time and tissues on their eyes.

See Paul Henreid just as intense as Henry in "Between Two Worlds (1944)"

Movie Review: The Original "Divine" Bette
Summary: 5 Stars

While Davis has legions of fans, and many find "Dark Victory" or "All about Eve" her best work, I always seek out "Now Voyager" as my favorite! It's Pygmalion qualities of transformation from ugly duckling to chic grande dame are thrilling. While I would have urged more detailed scenes such as the actual dinner table conversation that her mother couldn't attend because of a sprained ankle, it was a war-time film and likely had budget restrictions. The now-famous cigarette scenes with her co-star, Paul Henreid, still beckon with seduction. I suspect we are all guilty of wanting to reach for the stars. . . I have purchased this DVD many times, giving it away to the unacquainted young who don't know the work of Miss Davis. It should be in any cinephile's collection,

Movie Review: Lots of romance and lots of smoking.
Summary: 5 Stars

Bette Davis plays Charlotte Vale, a maiden aunt, a spinster, who escapes from under the thumb of her domineering mother to change her life, her outlook, her very appearance. She goes from a staying-in-her-bedroom nerd to sexy single woman in just one ocean voyage. She is the star. So much so that I don't plan to list anybody else. Like in most of the films of the time, and in many of her films, she can't stop smoking. Which I find funny. They're holding burning cigarettes even while kissing. I'm surprised they didn't burn the sets down.
James Wood thought this was one of the best films of all time and I have to agree.

Movie Review: Bette at her romantic zenith
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a huge Bette Davis fan and this is my favorite Bette Davis movie. She plays the repressed Charlotte with a very belivable hysterical edge. Who wouldn't be depressed and crazy with Gladys Cooper for a mother(also one of this wonderful character actor's best performance)? Enter the always excellent Claude Raines as Dr. Jackwith and Charlott's transformation begins. She meets Paul Henreid (Jerry) on a cruise and falls madly in love with him even though he is married and can never divorce. Their romance is timeless and ageless. I love introducing people who have never seen this movie to this true classic.

Movie Review: Classic Betty Davis
Summary: 5 Stars

I really liked this film, first because it's classic Betty Davis, second because it's a love story with a twist which reflects the moral values and self-sacrifice of yesteryear. Bette Davis' performance in this film was outstanding as she changed from a dowdy over-wrought spinster to a sophisticated beauty and subsequent love triangle and redeeming outcome. "Oh Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." Gladys Cooper was fabulous as the overbearing domineering mother.Claude Rains was excellent in his portrayal of the psychiatrist. A very good film.
