Movie Reviews of Now, Voyager (Keepcase)

Movie Review: A missed existence rebirths from the ashes!
Summary: 5 Stars

A shattered spinster (Bette Davis) lives trapped in her own house. She lives with a dominant mother plus her caustic sister and cynical niece, who makes of her a motive of daily mock.

In these conditions of isolation and low self stem, a psychiatrist (The great Claude Rains) aids her to bring up from her living shell and slow but progressively nourish her lost youth, improving her self stem when she is carried to a mental institution.

When she is impelled to make a cruiser, her life will experience a crucial twist of fate with an architect. She will grow up and assume a complete domain of herself, generating a clash of all sort when her family doesn't stop to marvel and surprise themselves due this unexpected transformation.

This multidimensional melodrama was supported thanks to an agile and smart script and the presence of a glorious cast. A set of vignettes will take place all the way through until the circle gives its last round.

Besides, this film is a true rareness for all Davis' fans because she appears like the victim and not the ruler.

A mature film that deserves your whole attention. A solid film that doesn't seem to turn off through these years(67).

Movie Review: The ugly duckling becomes a beautiful SWAN
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is like two fairy tales in one, Cinderella and The Ugly duckling..acted magnificently by Bette Davis..Charlotte Vale,(Bette Davis) a spinster who has been manipulated and mentally beat down by her
widowed domineering mother is determined to keep Charlotte as her personal servant believing it is a daughters duty to keep her company and cater to her...

Charlotte comes to the end of her rope and starts to break down, finally her mother is convinced by family to get her help...Claude Rains is the compassionate pychologist that encourages her to stand on her own.
Charlotte loses weight and her kind sister in law loans her beautiful clothes, and offers her a cruise where she blossoms and finally finds the courage to stand up to her mother...

This is my favorite Bette Davis movie...next to ALL about Eve...

To some this may along move slow, but I like it because it builds to a happy ending and Charlotte Vale finds herself and inner voice...interesting character study...it is refreshing to have a story on screen, without violence, blood, and explicit scenes...

Movie Review: The Untold Want
Summary: 5 Stars

Walt Whitman wrote, "The untold want by life and land ne'er granted, Now voyager sail thou forth to seek and find." This short poem serves as the theme of both the film and its star's continual battles with Hollywood for self-determination.

Davis is brilliant as the brow-beaten Charlotte, used by her twisted, domineering mother and deprived of her own identity. Ultimately, she suffers a breakdown and discovers her own inner strength due to the kindness of the doctor and staff of a sanatorium. Testing her new-found-freedom, Charlotte takes a cruise and falls in love with Jerry, a married man with an equally unhappy and neglected daughter.

Charlotte returns home. Her newfound strength enrages and frustrates her mother so that she has a heart attack. Her death sends Charlotte back to the sanatorium, overcome by guilt. However, she emerges stronger than ever, finding the life of independence she deserves, and able to give that strength to others as well.

It's hard to pick the best of Bette Davis' films, but Now Voyager has my vote.

Movie Review: Oh, Jerry!
Summary: 5 Stars

Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is a dowdy spinster who has been driven to a nervous breakdown by her tyrannical mother. She enters a sanitarium and emerges an attractive and confident woman, ready to experience life on her own terms. On a cruise, she meets Jerry (Paul Henried), a married man; he's charming and romantic and they fall in love.

This is a great movie. Charlotte's physical and emotional transformation and her Grand Passion are the stuff that make many female hearts race, including mine. Davis gives a powerful, intelligent performance and was justly nominated for an Oscar. Leading men didn't come any smoother than Henried and he pulls off the now-silly double-cigarette act with absolute aplomb, making his flawed character seem almost heroic. Max Steiner's heart-tugging score won an Academy Award.

The movie is pure escapist delight with beautiful people, gorgeous clothes, exotic locations, and, of course, Love. A true classic romance that makes me swoon. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: The Ugly Duckling becomes a Swan!
Summary: 5 Stars

This Classic movie from Warner Bros. should be more to the forefront of any Davis bio or filmography. She never (in real life ) seemed to care about her IMAGE as she said ( I always wanted to look like the Character, whether glamourus or downright ugly!) and from real life photos she was never vain about the content. In fact most of her private photos are very unflattering. In this movie , however , she becomes ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, not just in looks but also as a sympathetic character who the audience roots for. In short, this is a fantastic love story that will stay with you forever, and despite the later, almost drag queen, performances, proves why this little, bug eyed woman was so revered as The consumate movie actress. No one else at this time could have evoked such sympathy with this role.
I pity todays stars who are forced to prostitute themselves in commercial movies that are forgotten even before the DVD release.
