Movie Reviews of Not One LessMovie Review: Deeply moving and poetic Summary: 5 Stars
Zhang Yimov is a master in conveying the courage from people in disparity in a subtle unpretentious and yet extremely powerful fashion. Unless your heart is made of stone, you will be readily moved by this and develop a strong sense of care and love for those people in a distant land. The cinematography of this movie, like all his movies in the past, is rich, intimate, and works in wonder to bring us so close to the story. This movie used only non-professional actors/actresses, which brings a level of authenticity and freshness, which at times gives the movie the convincing power of a documentary.
Movie Review: Real People told us a real story Summary: 5 Stars
This film is so simple, as its title. A young subtitute rural village teacher should keep her students. This small village has a problem about education, poor family, transportation, and information. No wonder that it looks like small world in a big country.
Zhang Yimao is a very sensitive's director. He can show audience about a purity, natural, and sencere scenes. One thing that can make me amaze about this movie is that he uses all talents so real.
The framing, color, and ambience is so beautiful. We can a lot of details refer to the chinese culture. So obvious.
Movie Review: tearjerker Summary: 5 Stars
I've seen quite a few of Zhang Yimou's movies and this one is really different. For one thing, it doesn't star Gong Li, and for another, it is not bursting from the seams with opium, sex, prostitution, concubines, decadence, and everything deemed immoral by Western culture. There is no sad ending, it is not a period piece, and most importantly, the woman is not portrayed as a poor, helpless victim, but a strong-willed heroine. I saw this movie on a twelve-hour flight from Shanghai to San Francisco and it took all of my strength not to cry in front of everyone on the plane.
Movie Review: Excellent movie, shows a true picture of modern China Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is truly wonderfully done. I appreciate the lightheartedness of the characters, and the deep resonances of director Zhang Yimou's commentary on academics in modern rural China. The language is particularly good for students learning Mandarin Chinese, as it shows an excellent example of the differences between spoken Chinese in the countryside and in the cities. There are English subtitles for beginners as well. I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: Small but Strong Summary: 5 Stars
Not one Less is a movie of what 1 person, whether they are the smallest or youngest, can do when they put their mind to it. This movie takes us through the struggle and stress that one has to go through to find what they need. The main character's performance starts off meager, but builds, just as her relationship with the students builds...The score helps get the messages through, and with Zhang Yimou's direction, the film is 10 times better.
