Movie Reviews of Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders ShowMovie Review: So sharp, even 15 years on. Summary: 5 Stars
Great to see this selection of episodes re-released, as the only other place to see Larry is in syndication (if you're lucky).
A few repeats (of other episodes in another Best Of.. Larry compilation) but mostly different ones, and with a lot of new extra content. The recent cast interviews show a candour and hindsight that is usually lacking from other DVD interviews (which tend to be more gushing & still spouting soundbites from the PR people). The longer interviews where Gary Shandling meets up with celebs who appeared on the show are very interesting (very natural) to the point of making you feel slightly uncomfortable, and would have benefited greatly from some direction.
I've yet to watch the documentary included on the discs, as there is so much you can't do it justice in one sitting. Great value.
Movie Review: Not polite to write in caps. . . Summary: 5 Stars
. . . but if I were to quote Artie in the spider show, "Huge laughs. . .huge!," I'd have to, just to capture his passionate insincerity. It would be 50/50, well 60/40, if I were considering the purchase now, with the Complete set due in November. But I got it in May and no regrets. Just terrific. I've watched three of the four discs and I'm dragging my feet because I don't want to finish too soon. Not only do the shows hold up but the extras are wonderful. All these stars are egotistical but also self-aware, and used to talking intriguingly about themselves to friends and therapists. Great stuff, whether it's phony baloney or utterly sincere, some performed in absurd situations (Garry sparring in a boxing gym with Alec Baldwin). Even the Jon Stewart phone conversation, the slowest of the group, is worth watching.
Movie Review: I MUST HAVE MORE GARRY SHANDLING !!! HE'S TOO FUNNY ! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this DVD because it has TOM PETTY'S appearance on the Larry Sander's show and an interview with TOM PETTY. The interview with TOM PETTY is the best interview of the entire DVD collection, because GARRY SHANDLING is most relaxed and at peace with himself during this AWESOME interview piece. The other interviews are GREAT as well, but the interview with TOM PETTY is on another plane. YOU MUST SEE IT to know of what I speak. It's like trying to explain how chocolate tastes. You must taste it for yourself to know. SO, buy this DVD ASAP!! You will laugh and laugh and laugh. I must have more GARRY SHANDLING now. I missed the Larry Sander's Show and the GARRY SHANDLING show. Are they available on a DVD collection also? Please contact me if you can help me to get more GARRY SHANDLING. [...]
Movie Review: Any Larry is Good Larry Summary: 5 Stars
It's annoying that so many people have used this reviewers' forum to express their disappointment that the entire series isn't being released. I feel your pain, but get over it. You don't control the rights to the show, so it's not your call. The 1-star reviews (of a set none of us have watched yet) will turn other people off and they will miss out on a great show. I'm kind of looking forward to the bonus interviews, which are all new and not just the usual "filler" junk (such as a dump of the electronic press kit), that most DVDs have the nerve to consider a purchase-incentive. I suspect that if this set sells well, there may be a business decision made to release intact season sets beyond the first, but if you go out of your way to badmouth this release, we may never know.
Movie Review: At least it's something.... Summary: 5 Stars
Have to give Larry 5 stars as it's one of the finest comedies ever - and I'll still buy this - but I hope the parties concerned can sort out their differences and give us the full, unexpurgated seasons at some point. Further series releases of Malcolm In the Middle are apparently being hung up by some lawyer b.s., and it's also criminal that we've only had seasons 1 & 2 of 'Dream On' released so far (Larry fans should check this show out - it's masterful). Here in the UK, Seinfeld, Larry and Dream On were shunted around different late night slots with no promotion and were criminally ignored - but then we British seem to mainly watch mindless rot these days, sadly. Anyway, at least we fans are getting some more Larry, so let's be grateful for small mercies - Hey now!
