Movie Reviews of North to AlaskaMovie Review: Makes me laugh... Summary: 4 Stars
This was a great movie. While not my favorite John Wayne movie, it is still a good one! I always laugh at the scenes where his character is getting jealous about his friend being with Angel. Nobody does it like John Wayne. Love the song too!
Movie Review: North To Alaska Summary: 4 Stars
The movie is an oldie and a goldie. Very good, entertaining movie. I am a John Wayne fan and this is a different type of movie for him. He and the other members of the cast did a great job.
Movie Review: Serious Comedy Summary: 3 Stars
The first time I began to watch NORTH TO ALASKA, I could only stomach the first five minutes or more. After that, I quickly found another video. That doesn't make any sense for someone who loves Westerns, especially ones starring John Wayne. So why would I quit? Well -- it was too funny, too slap-stick for a Western of my tastes. Imagine my surprise, when a few months later, a friend suggested I watch it with her. I hestitated, but finally acquiesced to her request. I watched not only the first five minutes, but the whole thing. I was in for a big surprise! It was an excellent Western afterall! Sure, there are parts that are comedy, but there are also parts that are nothing short of classic John Wayne Western, and you will NOT be disappointed if you purchase this wonderful flick. It will keep you coming back again and again! Go for it, pull out the credit card like the fast-draw, and fire a shot at this Western! You'll be glad you did, and you can then walk straight and tall down main street, with your head held up high just as if you beat the odds in an old wild west shootout! Bang Bang! A Happy Customer Indeed -- PS: Just went out and bought myself a pair of high Sonora Western boots now! Next item on my shopping list? A good Stetson Western hat!!! Hi-Ho Silver!!!
Movie Review: Typical John Wayne Summary: 3 Stars
John Wayne had a knack for making movies that were just fun to watch. This is one of them.
Movie Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the DVD based on all the positive reviews, and I think prospective buyers should be warned that not everyone finds this a 5-star movie. My husband and I, who love old movies, hated it. My teenagers just found it completely uninteresting. It was apparently made about the time Alaska became a state, although it deals with an earlier time period, and the movie has not aged well. The story was uninteresting, the direction was uneven, the comedy (mostly bar fights) felt forced and awkward. Stewart Granger did not seem to know what he was doing or why his character was there. Fabian's acting was unmemorable and we felt Capucine was miscast. We got bored and spent half the movie pointing out to each other how little the sandy beaches and desert terrain looked anything like Alaska (it was obviously shot in southern California). I gave it two stars because I was able to sit through the entire thing, but I spent most of it asking myself "why? Why am I wasting my time like this?"
