Movie Reviews of NormalMovie Review: Defining "Normal" Summary: 5 Stars
Superb performances by Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson anchor this thoughtful and emotional drama about a farm couple in Iowa whose 25-year marriage is threatened when the husband reveals himself to be transgendered, and announces that he is planning to undergo a sex-change operation. The script skillfully avoids sensationalizing the subject by treating it with sensitivity and dignity, and presenting a balanced look at the wife's pain and confusion; the husband's longing to reconcile his body with his mind and emotions; and the disruption that the pending change causes in the relationships between the couple, their family, and the community in which they live. The resulting film is a layered and perceptive examination of what it means to be an individual human being with the attendant need to be accepted and loved by yourself, as well as those you hold dear. Most highly recommended.
Movie Review: wow Summary: 5 Stars
I've never written a review before, but I was so impressed with this movie, I felt like I should write something. Even though I personally don't deal with the specific issues in this film, I was deeply touched by Jane Anderson's script and the performances by Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson are nothing short of incredible - definitely some of the best work either has ever done. I do have to agree that Jessica Lange steals the show. Her reactions to what is happening to her are exactly what I imagine someone in her shoes might go through. I liked the way church issues were dealt with as well, although it wasn't surprising that Roy was treated as an outcast by the members of the congregration. Sad, but often the case.I highly recommend this movie to anyone who needs inspiration. Very powerful film.
Movie Review: Not Quite Normal Summary: 5 Stars
Normal is the laugh-out-loud feelgood transgender comedy of the year. Jessica Lange easily tops her performance in Tootsie as the sympathetic lover of a man hoplessly conflicted with his "inner woman". Tom Wilkinson delivers nonstop laughs with his performance as Roy/Ruth. The reveal of Roy's first appearance in drag resembles Margaret Thatcher as an aging hooker. Best line: "I had no idea they were so sensitive," when Roy refers to his new set of man breasts. I don't think I have ever seen a film miss the mark by so much but still remain so entertaining. Kudos Jane Anderson!!!
Movie Review: Fantabulous Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the greatest movies ever made, it is probaly my favorite movie. The characters are well played out. I am not going to describe what happens in the movie, but before I watched this movie, I did not really believe in sex changes or quite understand them. I am a homosexual, yet I still thought of transexuals as "weird". This movie opened my eyes up. This movie really gets to you. You get to know the characters, and understand what it is like for transexuals and what the actually go through. This is a movie I will always have in my collection, and recommend to friends.
Movie Review: Still Stays with Me... Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie years ago when it was first aired by HBO and it's one of my favorites because, besides it being a difficult role for a man's man like actor Tom Wilkinson to play, he succeeded brilliantly. And Jessica Lange was, of course, great in it as well. Her character's attempt at dealing with what she realizes is the loss of the 'man' she's been married to for so many years, is wrenching. As a woman, I tried to imagine what it would be like to be in such a situation. Stunning emotional acting......I'm ordering this right now!
