Movie Reviews of NormalMovie Review: Define Normal Summary: 5 Stars
"Normal" is a powerful movie about a married couple who faces turbulances after the husband, Roy, reveals to his wife, Irma, that he wants to become a woman. As the problems arise, the emotional value becomes stronger. This is a great educational movie for those wanting to learn about transexuality. The realisms of such issues are heavily present from beginning to end. It proves that defining "normal" is not possible. The writing is brilliant. Their previous research of every expressed issue is present. This movie is not just about transexuality; it's also a love story. Such combination makes the movie much more interesting. Its intense scenes keep audiences' eyes wide open. The performers offer their own emotional sense that takes the movie to a higher level. Tom Wilkinson's Emmy and Golden Globe nominated role as Roy never loses the emotional value for a moment. His performance deserves great respect. Some may say this is role is above 2001's "In the Bedroom". Two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange portrays Irma wonderfully. Her character's hardships are desplicted beautifully. All other actors also performed their roles wonderfully. "Normal" is an unforgettable movie that will keep audiences moved for a long time.
Movie Review: A kind of sense and sensibility to keep. Summary: 5 Stars
"Normal" is a movie about a man who feels he is a woman who is trapped in a man's body. After 25 years of marriage he decides to admit this to himself, his wife, family, co-workers, and everyone else. He then makes gradual outward changes: perfume, ear rings, longer hair, clothes, hormones, and finally a sex change to become a female. But this is not a movie for those curious about how weird these things may be, nor is just about tranvestites, although it is about that. Moreover>>> This is a love story. Not since "Boys Don't Cry" have I seen a more emotional compelling drama. Jessica Lange is exquisite as the confused and emotionally starved wife, who, with great elan, faces the situation and makes the best of it as only a midwesterner facing a crisis can do. Tom Wilkerson is magnificent as the husband. Director-writer, Jane Andersen, manages a sense of humor and appropriate old ballads to introduce scenes. Irony abounds, e.g. the church sign showing the title of the Sunday sermon, "God Loves a Challenge." Finally I think this was a difficult and controversial story which was told and acted with sensitivity, intelligence, truth, and taste. In a way it represents the sense and sensibility of our time. A memory keeper.
Movie Review: So your mate wants a sex change,Huh? Summary: 5 Stars
Thank you HBO and Jane Anderson for an emotional roller coaster of a film that examines one not-so-simple theme: Your partner of 25 years wants a sex change! Of course...this IS after all a movie made for cable which tosses convention to the wind!
Award winners Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson (who seems to be able to play ANY role) go at each other through love, hate, laughter, tears and sense and sensibility as Irma and Roy who after 25 years must grapple with the future survival of their marriage when Roy reveals that he has always been a woman trapped in a man's body. This is no laughing matter, yet director Jane Anderson infuses this utterly absorbing screenplay with enough raw and touching humor, that keeps this film from becoming too maudlin. It is the exact amount of drama peppered with light-heartedness performed by two phenomenal veteran geniuses that makes this film a most interesting and unconventional winner. If you are a lover of character studies and great acting, this one is right up your alley; no car chases, no killing....just raw emotion! That appeals to me!
Movie Review: Emotional Rollercoaster Summary: 5 Stars
In this movie Roy and Irma have been married for 25 years when he confesses his desire to have a sex change. Roy has thought long and hard about this has made his decision. His wife, family and community are in shock. This movie will take you along on the rollercoaster from the point Roy confesses his desires through the process that he (and those he love) go through as he make the change from "Roy" to "Ruth". I think the movie is great. The acting is superb. The supporting roles are just as well acted as the stars. I would disagree with other reviews that feel this movie is an honest account of a middle age family man in a small midwestern town going through a sex change transition. I think in reality he would have been "shunned" to a greater extent than in this story. This doesn't detract from the movie at all as the movie's intense focus is on the relationship between Roy and Irma. The movie is wonderful. If you liked this movie you may like the book "Trans-sister Radio" by Chris Bohjalian.
Movie Review: Riveting Drama Summary: 5 Stars
Roy (Tom Wilkinson) and Irma (Jessica Lange) are a normal farm family with an estranged son and a teenage daughter. After their 25th wedding anniversary, Roy confesses that he is a woman trapped in a mans body. At this point, I expected things to get absurd, including the predictability that we will see Roy in drag. However, Director/Writer Jane Anderson allows all ssues to come the forefront; family, friends, religion, coworkers and community. What seems a destiny for ruination is full of surprises and Anderson can humble the viewer by showing how anyone can be easily misunderstood. The performances by Wilkinson and especially Lange are nothing short of amazing. The emotions run high, vivid and clear as each person struggles with this abrupt revelation that affects everyone's life. This is a precise study of empathy, understanding, the testing of relationships and most importantly - love.
