Movie Reviews of Noises Off...Movie Review: Sardines! Sardines! Summary: 5 Stars
"As soon as you take the weight off your feet, down it all comes on your head..." You'll meet Miss Otley (Carol Burnett), Miss Ashton (Nicolette Sheridan), Mr Lejeune (John Ritter), Mr Dallas (Christopher Reeves), Miss Blair (Merrilu Henner) all on stage of 'Nothing On' while the Director Lloyd Fellowes (Michael Caine), Stage Manager Tim Allgood (Mark Linn-Baker), and Asst. Stage Manager Poppy Taylor (Julie Hagerty) fret over missed entrances, cues, props, actors....
"Sardines here, sardines there..."
This play starts with the dress rehearsal before opening night (or is it the tech rehearsal?) ;) As they proceed to rehearse, the director begins to realize he's gotten a lot more than he bargained for. As the show becomes more popular, dramas backstage are colliding with the performance on stage. Skeletons begin to come out of the closet and all this leads up to a deep dark secret that involves the director himself.
With an all-star cast, this is highly recommended for anyone looking for a "good old-fashioned plate of sardines", I mean a good old-fashioned comedy. There are some provocative undertones, so please use caution.
Movie Review: Because they make it look easy... Summary: 5 Stars
While in school, if I had a big test or even a huge amount of homework to do I would sometimes sit myself down in front of the television with my books to study. I flipped through the channels because I often worked better with background noise. My teachers only hoped it wasn't this movie because without fail, if this movie was on, I was watching it. I've been behind the scenes in a few of my high school's plays and I know how hard it is to get everyone on their marks and ready with props or even the right cue in mind. This great bunch of actors and actresses make it look easy. John Ritter was of course wonderful with physical comedy but in this cast he wasn't alone. Christopher Reeve who was obviously taken from us way before his time and Carol Burnett who I thought was just right in this role...Julie Hagerty was great (Ted would be proud if not for his drinking problem). Nicolette was perfect and I can't believe anyone thinks she looks that different these days as a non-desparate housewife. If someone doesn't like this kind of comedy then sure, I get why they might not like this movie because farce is done to perfection here.
Movie Review: Don't Miss the Original Summary: 5 Stars
I'll echo the companion reviews in raves for the film itself and my great delight in replacing my timeworn VHS with a new DVD. But what I'd like to add is that this is a remarkably skillful screen adaptation of the even funnier original stage play. By all means, buy the DVD. And if you like the movie, take pains at all costs to see "Noises Off" on stage. The startling novelty is that the entire set rotates between scenes to show first the chaotic tech/dress rehearsal from the front, or audience, view, then depicting a subsequent performance, loaded with interpersonal conflicts and amazingly choreographed sight gags and goofs as seen backstage! The last act shifts back to an audience view of an ensuing performance disaster, leaving you to imagine clearly what must be going on behind the set. The title refers both to the scripted off-stage sound effects and the thumps and crashes that signal the hi jinks backstage. The play is a popular choice for resident theater companies and occasional roadshow productions. Don't miss it!
Movie Review: laughing at someone else's misfortunes Summary: 5 Stars
Although actors, directors, and crew members who have put on a show have an easier time relating to this movie, pretty much anybody who's ever had a good idea go wrong will get a kick out of Noises Off. You get acquainted with the actors' on- and off-stage characters, and the storyline of the play they're doing, just so you can see how badly they mess it up and how chaotic things can get on the road and backstage. Most of the comedy is slapstick and verbal...it's one of thoes movies that you almost always find something new every time you watch it. There's definitely a little bit of sexual humor...enough that it's not a family-type movie, so just a little warning. It's for sure a good group movie, almost funnier when watched in mixed company. This is definitely one of those little-known gem type of movies, especially with all the big name actors. It's not surprising to find Carol Burnett and Michael Caine in it, but what a different side of Christopher Reeve! I would highly recommend adding this movie to your comedy collection.
Movie Review: Comedy on SO Many Levels . . . Summary: 5 Stars
It's rare to find something that EVERYONE finds funny. We are defnitely diverse in our tastes, quirks, and tolerance for "certain types" of humor . . . and because of this, I don't often expect to enjoy movies that others rave about. This time, however, I was pleasantly surprised!
Noises Off has a cast of characters, funny in their own right; writing that is witty, full of puns, and rapid-fire reparte; visual gags that appeal to the slightly more juvenile side in all of us (the cactus bit was especially funny), and a sense of the absurd that had me laughing days after my first viewing.
The "play within a play" set up is especially fun for any of us who have ever worked in the theatre, be it professonal, community, college, or grammar school, because those of us "who have been there" realize just how many things can and do go wrong behind the scenes.
Not a movie for kids (too much sexual innuendo, double entendre and imagery), it is, nonetheless a FUNNY, must-see show.
