Movie Reviews of Noises Off...Movie Review: Very different, very funny Summary: 5 Stars
If you're up for a break from the uneven and unending strain of romantic comedies that seem to carry the torch of movie comedies nowadays, then "Noises Off" will give you that opportunity.
I found this movie completely by accident on cable one day. It followed something else I had just watched and I hadn't yet turned away to anything else. And, boy, I'm glad I didn't. This movie about a troubled cast trying to get a troubled play off the ground kept me smiling, chuckling, and outright laughing all the way thru.
I immediately bought it and got the whole family together for a viewing, and they all enjoyed it just as much.
I'm sure this was a good change of pace for Christopher Reeve from his Superman days. He was a very versatile actor and this comedic role is a good proof of that.
John Ritter was well know for his verbal and physical comedic skills. All are used to good and entertaining purpose here.
What can you say about Carol Burnett. Since her early days on stage and TV, she has always delivered. This is no exception.
You'll also find good performances by Michael Caine, Denholm Elliot, Nicolette Sheridan, and others.
What was amazing to me is that I've greatly enjoyed every member of this cast in other films (and TV shows), yet I had never heard of this movie, despite being a movie buff.
Now, it is conceivable that someone who doesn't enjoy some farce and slapstick with their comedy won't get into this film. Otherwise, if you haven't seen "Noises Off", you are in for quite a treat when you finally do. :-)
Movie Review: When Carol Burnett goes onstage in Cleveland... Summary: 5 Stars
...I lose my mind with laughter. Most of the lucky minority of comedy fans who have discovered "Noises Off" probably have other favorite scenes. One bored Friday in the late '80's I scanned the movie reviews and was amazed that this movie, with its flawless cast, was playing. I hadn't seen one TV ad or movie trailer.
The film shows the insanity and eccentricities of the cast, crew, and director of a farce on its way to Broadway. The first half shows the dress rehearsal, which also shows us how the play is supposed to go. Next we see a feuding cast during a Miami Beach matineee, this time from backstage. By Cleveland all hell has broken loose. Will they pull themselves together by the Broadway opening? I'm not saying.
Watching this now (2008-2010), it's hard not to feel sad about the early losses of John Ritter and Christopher Reeve, with Denholm Elliott gone as well. Reeve, Ritter, and Burnett are the most spectacular of one of the best ensembles I've ever seen. Caine is the sardonic director, Marilu Henner is the upbeat cast cheerleader, Nicolette Sheridan the cast ditz (though she gets her lines right). Special mention to Julie Hagerty and Mark Linn-Baker as crew members running themselves ragged trying in vain to keep things together.
This is extra swell if you've ever been involved with theater at any level. It aspires to take everything that usually goes wrong with almost any production and shifts it into super-overdrive. I hope the cast and crew of this film had as much fun making this as I had watching it!
Movie Review: Possibly the funniest movie ever Summary: 5 Stars
Time magazine's review of this movie read: "The bad news is that this movie is not as funny as the play. The good news is that it is the funniest movie you will ever see." And it is ... even after repeated viewings. The all-star cast is perfect -- Denholm Elliott in his final role is a treasure, while Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine show satisfyingly subtle takes on broad comedy. (AND you get to enjoy a young, cute Nicolette Sheridan!)
Broad comedy is what this is, and no one should expect otherwise. It's based on the production of Britain's "Whitehall farces" which sharpened themselves by touring the provinces before playing London's Whitehall Theatre (being exported afterword to the world, including Broadway, which explains the American shift in the screenplay). Everyone who has spent any time in theatre -- even high school or community theatre -- will recognize the personality types that make up this (or any) theatrical troupe of misfits, caricatured here, to be sure, and hence all the funnier.
The laughter comes not only from well-written and well-delivered lines, but also from near-perfect character interplay, and from tightly choreographed action with multiple surprise riffs.
This is THE movie for anyone with a funnybone and a strong sense of the ridiculous. Peter Bogdanovich directs.
(BTW: My personal choice for the funniest movie ever made remains Billy Wilder's "One, Two, Three" with the late great James Cagney. Check it out.)
Movie Review: This Movie is Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I am a high school Drama Student and recently I was cast in a play known as noises off. My teacher lent me this movie so I could get a good grasp of everthing that happens, because A good third of the script is just actions. The person I watched the most was Micheal Caine, because he was in the role that I was soon going to perform. I did not expect to laugh so hard at a movie. The only other movie I have ever seen Christopher Reve in was superman and I found it hard to believe that he was capaple of being as funny as he is in this movie.
By far the best person in this movie was John Ritter in the role of Garry. This guy goes from the sweetest guy in the world who is unable to get out a comprhensible sentence, to the most vengeful guy in theatre who can't get out a complete sentence.
As for Micheal Caine as Lloyd I could not have been happier with the casting. He is a brilliant actor and it is great fun to see him losing his temper and letting loose on all of his cast mates.
And then there is the role of Brooke, who is very great for all of the Male viewer considering that her costume for the majority of the movie is just her underwear, the author of the plat must have been very proud of himself for putting that little thing in their.
All in all I have to say that this is the most funny movie I have seen in years and I can't wait to give it a try myself.
Movie Review: Applause! Applause!! Summary: 5 Stars
Although I enjoyed it immensely the first time, this hysterical showbiz farce, got funnier with each viewing. It is also a good idea to watch it at least once with the subtitles on, since the dialogue is extremely fast paced. The the actors are delightful. Michael Caine plays the two-timing director with his usual perfection, and Carol Burnett plays the temperamental leading lady with her usual panache. Both John Ritter and Christopher Reeve are very funny, the former as the neurotic leading man and the latter as a dim-witted method actor who has to have his off-stage beat for removing a box of groceries explained to him. Marylu Henner and Nicolette Sheridan are excellent in their supporting roles, as is Denholm Elliott, a has-been actor who hides bottles of whisky in convenient cubby-holes back stage. I especially enjoyed Mark Linn Baker who plays the beleaguered stage manager.
Peter Bogdonovich's direction as well as his actors' split-second timing makes this farce a real treat. Doors open and close, plates of sardines get passed back and forth, props get mislaid, and everything goes exactly right--before it goes awfully wrong.
And therein lies the fun!
