Movie Reviews of No ReservationsMovie Review: Not a romantic comedy Summary: 4 Stars
I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that although billed as a romantic comedy, this movie is neither very romantic nor a comedy. The whole story of the sister dying and her little girl coming to live with Kate is really quite sad. I have to assume CZJ was drabbed down a bit for this role. Aaron Eckhart has a great time with his part - an opera singer he is not, but a great lover of life, yes indeed. There is not a whole lot of chemistry between the leads, but thank God Nick is there to help Kate get used to the idea of being responsible for another human life, because she really struggles. I am somewhat ambivalent toward this movie. I wanted more in terms of character and relationship development. How well did Zoe know her aunt before she had to come live with her? Really, if Nick was such a catch as a sous-chef, why didn't he have a job as head chef at another restaurant? And without giving away the ending (except to say that it very much reminded me of the end of Waitress), the journey between the penultimate scene and the final scene would have made a pretty good movie in itself. However, I was consistently entertained and occasionally touched, and I think I will have to look up Mostly Martha now.
Movie Review: No Reservations, served well Summary: 4 Stars
If you enjoy romantic dramas I would say this is a pretty decent one. However, this is not a romantic comedy. Comedy means funny and it isn't funny very often. The main character or heroine, Kate, feels she is missing out on something in her life and her psychiatrist makes that abundently clear. When she loses her sister in a car accident she is left with a niece, Zoe, that is overwhelmed with her mothers death. The two try to cope with the loss. Meanwhile Kate is working as a top ten chef in a elegant New York restaurant. As she and her niece are working out their issues Kate takes some time off to spend with Zoe. When Kate returns she finds there is a new sous chef, Nick, that is hansom, funny (assumed as we see people laughing, but we never hear the jokes), and a pretty good chef that could be running his own kitchen. Kate sees this as a threat to her position and goes ballistic. Eventually she calms down and Nick and her relationship starts to blossom. My wife and I enjoyed it. Good quality DVD with decent replayability.
Movie Review: Enjoyable movie Summary: 4 Stars
This is a movie with humor, pathos, and romance. Catherine Zeta-Jones is great as the perfectionist chef, Kate, and Aaron Eckhart is charming as her costar in the kitchen. Abigail Breslin as the orphaned niece is very believable. This movie reminded me of An Unexpected Life, in which Stockard Channing is unprepared--but still forced--to take in her sister's children and then falls in love with them as she realizes the inestimable value of the children. A more humorous version of this story line is Baby Boom with Diane Keaton, which is completely delightful. No Reservations allows Kate to find out that there is more to life than being at the top; family is what makes success worthwhile. My only disappointment is in the DVD's feature--an episode of Food TV's "Unwrapped," about this movie. Would rather have seen the usual commentary about how the movie was made.
Movie Review: Sweet, but not as good as the original Summary: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this movie. It's light, but has some emotional depth. It's sweet, but not cloying. It's fun, but no comedy. The soundtrack is playful and serious - opera and easy-listening, just like the movie.
However, I have to agree with other reviewers that the German original, Bella Martha, was superior in it's nuanced performance.
If you won't watch movies with subtitles and want a relatively clean (only suggested intimacy, nothing visible), sweet romance to watch on chick-flick night, this is a good choice. If you want a more subtle, endearing version of the film - watch the original. I own the original and borrow the remake :-)
Movie Review: Pretty good... Summary: 4 Stars
This is great fun.
Where else would you find a main character that has a lot of baggage? Well... that is just about everywhere you look right...
But where else would you find a main character who begins and her healing process with the death of a loved one and the hiring of a new chef?
Makes for an interesting story...
This is pretty good stuff. I don't think it will change anyone's paradigms about life but it makes for a good dinner time movie.
I meant to give this 3 stars not 4 but I guess Amazon doesn't let you change that once you hit preview your review.(Or my browser is goofy)
