Movie Reviews of No ReservationsMovie Review: One of the Top 10 Chick Flicks of all time. Summary: 5 Stars
This one is going to be a classic among women who like their romance sweet and sensible and their stories familiar but fun. I hope someone is paying attention because Eckhart and Zeta-Jones could be the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan pairing for the 21st century. It's a bit of a stretch seeing him as an opera buff, but other than that, he's flawless. His acting is directly on point and the character is written as a hero with a modern sensibility - not quite a metrosexual, but not the strong silent type either. He expresses his feelings openly in a wonderfully sexy way.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is pleasant in her part, in that odd way she has of seeming like an every-woman character in spite of her stunning looks. You feel as if you've known this character. The story line with the sister is predictably sad and played for effect, but the little girl is a scene stealer - she's entirely believable.
Some of the antics at the restaurant stretch your ability to suspend disbelief, but it's never so over the top that you can't see it happening that way in a place much better than you've ever worked in. It's all tied up in the requisite but perfect happy ending. I'll watch this one over and over and it's one I'll make all my girlfriends watch, too.
Movie Review: Great Friday Night Flick Summary: 5 Stars
If you love to cook and enjoy watching romance movies, then you'll like this one. Just watching Catherine Zeta-Jone's character make scallops, creme brulee, cheesecake, and pomme frites with steak, warmed my heart. The part where they eat tiramisu by the fireside made me melt. As I love to cook a great gourmet meal every now and then, watching people cook in this film reminded me of watching The Food Network.
As for the movie itself, in the beginning Catherine Zeta-Jone's character is real control freak. She's a talented chef but is extremely anti-social, rude, and arrogant. But then she starts working with a fun and unconventional sous chef who gets her to come out of her shell. Sure they bump heads not to mention ruin a few dinner orders, but in the end it all works out. In addition a wonderful relationship between the main character and her orphan niece develops beautifully. A great film to enjoy with a bottle of wine on a Friday night.
Movie Review: you'll cry Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought this was going to be some light rom com. Be prepared for serious tearing up in this one as, although it has its comic moments, it's a movie that knocks you for a loop. I won't spoil anything for anyone but it has both tears of joy and sadness.
I thought the casting was terrific from Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin (who could have come across as cute yet cloying but really was terrific in this as a kid whose world changes in an instant).
The DVD extra (there's only one) is a look at how the main actors prepared for their roles as chefs. It's an episode of "Unwrapped" from the Food Network and is really a fantastic insight into the way actors work.
Movie Review: Sweet Version Of "Hell's Kitchen." Poignant, Touching And Heartwarming. Summary: 5 Stars
From director Scott Hicks comes a sweet story about love, loss and fire in the kitchen. "No Reservations" starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin is a family version of the FOX TV hit "Hell's Kitchen." I half expected Chef Ramsay to come out and begin cussing everyone out. I loved this tender romance film. Coincidence that I saw this movie a week or two before "Waitress," a similarly-themed movie? I don't think so. While "Waitress" had some rougher language, this movie has a mild use of "Hell." The scene where Nick was singing "Nessun Dorma" from Giacomo Puccini's final (and unfinished) opera "Turandot" brought back vague memories for me. Great film. Rated PG for thematic elements.
Movie Review: I have no reservations about No Reservations Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this movie. I went to see it on a date, and while it might be a tad predictable, it's a clean, heartwarming movie and definitely worth seeing. Clean, PG movies are hard to come by, and this one tells a great story. I admit that at a point the story moves a little slowly, but that's somewhat like life as well. Great performances by Zeta-Jones & Eckhart. They have real chemistry and are fun to watch. It's nice to see Catherine in a lighter role for a change as well! Watch it for a fun date movie or just for a sweet story. It's nothing more and nothing less.
