Movie Reviews of Ninotchka

Movie Review: "Never complain, Never explain."
Summary: 5 Stars

Garbo plays a Russian emissary who comes to Paris to try to win back some jewels that she believes belong to "the people" but were taken by the ousted czarists when the Communists took power. She arrives in Paris as the stereotypical harsh and practical Russian, but after meeting Melvyn Douglas she softens miraculously into the Garbo we know. He teaches her to recognize her passionate side; much of the comedy lies in the disconnect that occurs in our minds when we try to imagine Garbo sans a passionate side. The movie slows down, unfortunately, when she returns to Moscow, and it seems we wait forever for her reuniting with Douglas. But the picture is very stylish, with the "Lubitsch touch" ever present; Billy Wilder helped write it. A classic movie from that magical year (1939). Definitely worth a watch.

Movie Review: Brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

She comes to Paris thoroughly stripped of all her humanity. "Don't make an issue of my womanhood." She calls herself a little cog. She left the farm for the bayonet. She killed a man when she was 16. "Do you want to see my wound?" And yet when she meets a man in Paris, I swear she's flirting with him shamelessly. She flirts with him by insisting that there will be no flirting. "Suppress it." And she drags him to the Eiffel tower, to get all the technical specs for the Russian people. She calls him arrogant and tells him that his kind will be extinct. And then she invites herself to his apartment. "As basic material you may not be bad."

Summary: 5 Stars

A good comedy. Sort of a spoof on human nature and the desire to enjoy the good life.
A tale of three "Russians" who travel to Paris to sell some jewelry. While there, they discover how the `other half' lives and become accustomed to luxury. They do all in their power to remain
in Paris. Eventually, a fourth "comrade" (Greta Garbo) comes to Paris to straighten things out, but she also succumbs to the good life and falls in love with a Frenchman. This movie contains one of the silliest jokes, and yet one of the funniest around: A guy comes to a restaurant and orders a cup of coffee, no cream. Waitress comes back and says, "We are out of cream; can that be without milk"? Grumpy Ninotchka didn't laugh at that one, but she came around later. Just good entertainment.

Movie Review: What an absolutely charming Garbo vehicle!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is such a delight to watch.
You can't help but watch Garbo in this movie and be simply enchanted by her persona.

The acting is magnificent. I loved the 3 Soviet Stooges...their warmth is refreshing. I enjoyed Melvyn Douglas' performance. He was good. Perhaps William Powell or a Robert Montgomery could have done better (as discussed in an earlier review) but he was still quite ideal for the role.

A good screwball comedy with sharp wit to rent or buy. Watch it and you will enjoy this idealistic comedy!

Movie Review: Ninotchka
Summary: 5 Stars

"Garbo Laughs!" screamed the publicity, and so will you (laugh, not scream). Director Ernst Lubitsch brings all his trademark sophistication and style to this gossamer "East meets West" romance. Garbo's transformation from icy harridan to warm, alluring female is still a wonder to behold, and Douglas is nicely understated and suitably wry as the Count, never stepping in Garbo's light too much. Peerless script by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, this is the movie equivalent to champagne, and, of course, caviar.
