Movie Reviews of Nine Queens

Movie Review: a true gem
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite of all times - amongst the foreign pictures :)

This Argentinian film tells the story of two swindlers who meet by pure luck, or is it really? and they set up together a scam surrounding the Nine Queens stamps.

Director Fabian Bielinsky has a passion for Wilder and Mankiewicz's films, and more precisely for their elaborate double-crossing deceits, as is obvious in this film.

The movie is a true gem that is most unfortunately forgotten because of all the blockbusters; it should definitely be on everyone's list to watch as the ending is quite surprising.

Movie Review: Nine Queens or Neuve Reinas
Summary: 5 Stars

Taut, and well thought out, this DVD will satisfy the action seeker, as well as the fans of deeper intrigue. A better portrayal of the seemy underside of "The Paris of South America" is impossible. Even without the nuances of the original Spanish, the grand old lady that is Buenos Aires shows some cracks in it's cosmetic veneer. Not at all representative of the rest of Argentina, "Nueve Reinas" captures some of the sense of instability in the fabric of society that will haunt viewers, and provoke discussion. Watch, and learn!

Movie Review: A Clever Con Film
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit...I was too busy being suspicious of everyone that I missed the twist at the end.

It really has one of those subtle plots that works because you're so sure that you're much too clever to be taken...

The characters were so obvious and the roles so stereotypical...it was like that 3 card switch that the hero's father pulled...nice, easy, simple...but in the end, you got had anyway...<grin>

Oh, one bit of warning, this is a foreign film with english subtitles...but yeah, worth the hassle.

Movie Review: Latin American cleverness
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the type of movie that represents life in Latin America. It's the living example of the "survival of the fittest" in a human context. Original and good in capturing the attention of the viewer. I watched this movie some years ago and after ten times of it I still enjoy the vocabulary, camera movements and actor/actresses performances. It's not the best movie at all, but it's a very good option if you want to have humor, intelligence and intrigue on your screen for a couple of hours. I recommend this film

Movie Review: Excellent Argentine film that Americans will enjoy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw Nine Queens (Nueve Reinas) while in Argentina in 2000, and absolutely loved this movie. It has appeal beyond it's country's borders. The plot pulls you in as it thickens, and the characters are vibrant. You will be riveted up till the end of this movie. The cinematography is also excellent, and the use of Buenos Aires' port and other areas is very well done. I haven't seen this movie yet in the US (hoping it comes to my town!) but plan to see it at least once more, if not several more times.
